Both children and adults have been continually riding their bicycles on the center sidewalks, even after having been asked to walk them. Two older female residents were hit when they were leaving CVS and sustained injuries requiring the ambulance to be called. It has become enough of a problem so that both older residents and parents with children have become fearful of walking through the center when people are riding their bicycles. It won't be long before a child leaving a store or bolting from a parent's hand is severely hit. Though we have had a bylaw stating that bicycle riding isn't allowed in the center business district, police officers on duty in the center haven't been enforcing it since there is no signage to point to. (A number of years ago, this was not a problem since we had continual police coverage in the center. However, the later afternoon and evening center police detail was lost due to budgetary constraints.) Whv on the sidewalk side of each trash receptacle: Though HDC has approved signage proposed by the Police Department, only having a few signs is inadequate. Needham found the only thing that was effective was putting vertical signs on every parking meter throughout their center. However, that won't work in Lexington center given the plantings and space between the parking meter poles and where people are riding their bicycles. Signage on each trash receptacle is needed so that both police officers and residents have something they can point to. Putting the signs on the sidewalk side of the receptacles will not detract from the view of the center from the street. Whv signage with a black background and white lettering: Signage with a black background will blend in with the color of the trash receptacles so that only the white printing will be seen. This will make the signs as unobtrusive as possible.
