RE: New Tourism Signage for the Lexington Visitors Center
Dear Mr. Welch:
The Lexington Chamber of Commerce is pleased to support and participate in the efforts of the
Lexington Tourism Committee regarding a comprehensive signage program that will enhance
and improve the tourist's experience in our town. Over the past couple of years, our organization
has been a part of the process as the design and content for these new tourism signs has evolved.
Of particular interest to us is the new place- naming sign under consideration for the Lexington
Visitors Center, which our organization operates seven days a week, 362 days a year. This
facility is the central greeting and information point for more than 100,000 visitors to Lexington
each year. The proposed new sign is both handsome and consistent with the other signs being
developed by the Tourism Committee. It will add a recognizable style and appearance to the
signage that guests seek out as they experience the heritage tourism of Lexington.
One concern that will need to be addressed, however, is that the Hours of Operation which
appear on the existing sign be somehow accommodated on some another separate new sign that
might be affixed either to the Visitors Center door or the Visitors Center building itself. This key
information is essential so that guests clearly know when the facility is open. It is my
understanding that the Tourism Committee will work with the Chamber to bring forward for
HDC consideration an appropriate solution to the Hours of Operation signage at some in the
near future.
The Chamber is hopeful that your board will recognize the merits of the Tourism Committee's
proposal for comprehensive tourism signage and give full consideration to their current
application. Respectfully, we ask for the HDC to support this signage permit request.
incerely,
Mary Jo
