HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION by: Date: 9/2/2004 / / Certificate No. 2004C-47 CHAIltMAN ✓ " r: f l/ Lexington Chamber of Commerce, Inc. 7une 1, 2006 Mr. Joseph Welch, Chairman Historic Districts Commission Town of Lexington 1625 Massachusetts Avenue Lexington, MA 02420 RE: New Tourism Signage for the Lexington V sitors Center Dear Mr. Welch: , The Lexington Chamber of Commerce is pleased to support and participate in the efforts of the Lexington Tourism Committee regarding a comprehensive signage program that will enhance and improve the tourist's experience in our town. Over the past couple of years, our organization has been a part of the process as the design and content for these new tourism signs has evolved. Of particular interest to us is the new place-naming sign under consideration for the Lexington Visitors Center, which our organization operates seven days a week, 362 days a year. This facility is the central greeting and information point for more than 100,000 visitors to Lexington each year. The proposed new sign is both handsome and consistent with the other signs being developed by the Tourism Committee. It will add a recognizable style and appearance to the signage that guests seek out as they experience the heritage tourism of Lexington. ne concern that will need to be addressed, however, is that the Hours of Operationvhich appear on the existing sign be somehow accommodated on some another separate new sign that might be affixed either to the Visitors Center door or the Visitors Center building itself. This key information is essential so that guests clearly know when the facility is open. It is my understanding that the Tourism Committee will work with the Chamber to bring forward for HDC consideration an appropriate solution to the Hours of Operation signage at some time in the near future. The Chamber is hopeful that your board will recognize the merits of the Tourism Committee's proposal for comprehensive tourism signage and give full consideration to their current applicatian. Respectfully, we ask for the HDC to support this signage permit request. Hope iPs helpful and keep in mind that Lynne Pease would be the definitive record on what they decided. ' -Joann G. stated that brown signs indicate historic sites to most people. Thus she favors this color scheme. - Lynn Hopkins asked how the signs would be mounted. -Joann G. emphasized that HDC tends to prefer use of existing posts or poles, where appropriate. -arious commissioners had a problem with the overall shape (outline)of the sign, feeling that it may be too fussy or too kitch. lan Adamson suggested that the sign shape shouldn't be symmetrical, since all the photo references shown were also not symmetrical. -several commissioners didn't care for the"fussiness"of the scroll and slogan that appears at the top of the sign. (lan actually liked the kitch quality of scroll, but Joann & Lynn did not.)The group consensus was to simply things by eliminating the siogan &scroll, and simply have LEXINGTON instead. -after some debate, the commissioners agreed that the?symbol for the Visitors Center was alright to keep, because it is an international symbol for information and Lexington receives visitors from around the world. -Joann very much liked John OtYs suggestion that the signs could be mounted on posts with sleeves(&caps} since this could facilitate periodic removai if needed. She also advocated for a (simple)black&white color scheme for John's signs (not to be confused with Kerry's). The group have very mixed opinions on this, and ultimately, consensus was for consistency in color. Thus, a brown color(exact brown still to be determined} would appear on both John's and Kerry's signs. -Joann suggested that the sign proponents put together a simple white panel with several swatches of severa! candidate browns on it, so that the HDC commissioners could take the test panel out into the sunlight to properly evaluate and pick the best brown. - Dan Fenn expressed concern over John Ott having iwo sign locations, but the overall group disagreed and consensus was for there to be a sign in front of the Visitors Center and a sign on Depot Square, each of which would profile upcoming events. - Joann had the group vote on a modified sign shape (see sketch}that is asymmetrical and is altered along the bottom edge compared with John Ott's original suggestion. Joann emphasized that she wanted John to be able to move forward with at least the basic construction of his two signs, so that he doesn't loose the funds that have been provided by GMVCVB. -Joann wants John to incorporate non-reflective(non-glare)glass into his sign, to cover the temporary notice section. Also, she wants it to be able to be locked, for security purposes. -Joann summarized the agreed design changes for John as follows: 1)eliminate scroll and slogan at top; instead, just have"LEXWGTON" in (approx.?)4"high letters 2) have"Visitors Center" in upper&lower case 5"letters 3) have 3"caps for"i" in Information {other letters lower case and proportionally smaller) 4) black wrought iron hardware will be used; background color will be a brown 5/2/2003 _ i ' 1 / i ' / I ' • . . . . . . . . . .
