At that point bikers had hit several people on Center sidewalks. Fortunately no one had been seriously hurt. The BAC accepted this assignment. When the BAC presented a signage proposal to the Center committee, it was suggested we include roller blading and skateboardering in our campaign. Thereafter the BAC included roller bladers and skateboarders in an effort to discourage utilization of Center sidewalks for activities other than walking: Presentations have been to the Center, Traffic and Safety Advisory and Design Advisory committees and the Police Department. All of the groups have made input into the final plan and given their approval. Proposal The Design Advisory Committee (DAC) recommended and the BAC concurred that the Center signage encouraging bikers, roller bladers and skateboarders not to utilize Center sidewalks take on a "Center Safety" theme. Karen Bechtell of the DAC has designed a sign which would replace five of the eleven "No Jaywalking" signs with a " No Jaywalking. No Bicycle Riding, Roller Blading or Skateboarding, on Center Sidewalks ". The advantage for having a more comprehensive sign is that it enables us to reduce the total number of signs in the center. We can eliminate six of the "No Jaywalking" signs in the Center. Two new "No Jaywalking. No Bicycle Riding, Roller Blading or Skateboarding on Center Sidewalks" signs will be placed at Bike Path exit points. An additional sign will be placed on an existing signpost on Muzzey Street in the vicinity of Raymond Street to discourage the high school bicycle riders. Smaller signs of "No-Ja velking. No Bicycle Riding, Roller Blading or Skateboarding on Center Sidewalks" will be mounted on five bike racks located around the Center. All signs would include a "Center Safety" logo. The new signs will provide an eye - catching green on white presentation, which differs from the normal black on white traffic sign. A follow up effort would include "Center Safety" articles in the "Minuteman" and material for the Police Department High School and Middle School Liaison. Conclusion The Design Advisory, Traffic and Safety Advisory, Center and Bike Advisory Committees and the Police Department feel that reducing the number of bicycle riders, roller bladers and skateboarders on the Center sidewalks is an important safety issue. It is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt due to a collision between a walker and a person on wheels. We understand these signs will not stop all bicycle riding, roller blading or skateboarding on Center sidewalks but even if these signs cause a small number of these participants to refrain from operating on Center sidewalks, the effort put forth by these committees will not be in vain. Placing these signs will also support the Lexington Police Department in enforcing the appropriate by- law.
