Ge ury, g FROM: Philip Taylor, Captain of Administration DATE: August 19, 1998 SUBJECT: Police Traffic Booth This is a follow-up memorandum to our recent meeting regarding the police titaffic booth located in Lexington Center. A new traffic booth shouid be a simple, temporary structure with the primary purpose of providing protection to an of'icer during inclement or very cold weather. We do not want a kiosk type of substation, and would expect that the booth would no longer be necessary once the tra.ffic lights are renovated. The basic elements of the booth should be as fo llows: 1. Secure—able to lock. 2. Internal hook to hang jacket or raincoat. 3. Shelf for rvriting and placing ticket books, etc. 4. Infrared heat. 5. Exterior overhanging roof to protect officer from rain when operating traffic lights from outside the booth. In summary,we would be looking for a simple, basic, pracUcable, temporary struciure. Key points raised were: 1. Is there really a need? Could the officer warm up in his/her car instead? r models? 2. What have other towns done. O the e r than 3. General consensus was to keep it simple and smaller rath larger. 4. Visibility was an issue. Both visibility of the officer by pedestrians and motorists, and the officer's unimpeded view of the area. T'here was discussion of"true divided" glass which was rejected by the group. The consensus was that the divided light glass (panes divided by wood similar to the CVS windows) heightened visibility of the structure, reduced visibility of the officer, and obstructed with his observarion of the ' area somewhat. Cleaning of the divided glass is also more time consuming. The recommendarion was something simple with maximum glass that blended or was as unobtrusive as possible.
