 INGT ' HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION
August 30, 1976 -
James F. Corr, Chief
Lexington Police Department
1575 PIassachusetts Avenize
Lexington, Massachusetts 02173
Dear Chief Corr:
Enclosed is your Certificate of Appropriateness for the iri-
stallation of the shelter for police department personnel at the
intersection of Waltham Street and Massachusetts Avenue . This
certificate authorizing the installation of the shelter has been
issued for a trial period from September l, 1976 to June l, 1977.
The installation of this shelter will result in one more structure
on f;he sidewalk area involved which already includes a fire alarm box,
a traffic control box, a street sign and two traffic light poles .
In its di^cussions on the srielter, the commission decided that it
should request a review of the sidewalk installations at this locaion
by the design advisory committee before giving permanent approval for
a police :nelter. However, since such review and any action which
may result tYerefrom could take several months, the corrunission has
decided to grant you temporary approval for the installation of the
shelter covering the fall, winter and spring period which starts
September lst .
Sincerely yours,
Wilbur M. Jaquith

Dear Mr. Jaquith:
The Police Department ts respecttully asking permission to place a
I telephone 600th on the sidewalk in the immediate vicinifiy of the traffic
ligh-h on Massachusetts Avenue at Waltham Street. The purpose of the
booth woutd be to provide a suitable place for the police ofticer on
duty at this intersection, to stand inside of, during severe cold or
ofiherwi se inc lerrnt weather.
, For many years I have tried to find a way to protect this officer from
the elements and, at the same time, not reduce his public visibility
or capability to view the entire area around which he stands.
The telephone booth suggestion surfaced earlier this year durirg this
kind of discussion and the telephone booth was acquired after meetings
with ofticials of the New Egland Telephone Canpany, who generously
danated same. Needless to say, I had forgotten that we were in the
Historic Districts area and woutd need your permission before installing
same. ,
I have attached a polaroid picture of this booth a5 it ppears ir► our
garage at the police station. I'm sure that you can see that it is in
exceilent condition. It is our intention to repiace the word TELEPHONE
at the top of the booth with the word POLICE.
I do hope that we can receive our ermission to mave ah

Dear Chief Corr:
I find sufficient authority in the statute creating our
Commission to extend, withaut a formal hearing, permission to main-
tain the temporary police shlter in Lexington center until June 1", i978 .
:.
Please consider this letter as authority to do so. ''
At the same time, we recognize that something more attractive
than a telephone booth is desirable. I have this week asked Mr.
Richard Magnuson, chairman of the Design Advisory Group, to see
what can be done, and he has agreed to investigate promptly. He may
contact you soon for your ideas.
Very truly yours,

Dear Pdr. Kssler:
The Historic Districts Commission on August 4, 1976, issued

for the instrllttion of a Pormer telephone booth as an enclased
shelter, Por Police Department use t the above locntton. Approval
for i;he installation af this shelter was granted by the Comm3.ssion
for the tril neriod September 1, 1976 to June l, 19?7, and the
shelter is to be removed on the ltte.r cate unless the instnllation
period is exter_decl by the Commi3sion. I enc2ose a copy of the
Certificate of Aopropriateness for your informtion. i
In rantin bprovPl. for he temporery installation oP this

However, the Commission lso £elt th,t the former tel.ephone booth
might not be aestheticlly :nproprite s z permanent installation

booth hr+s been instlled, including trRffic lihts, traffie control

Mr. Anthony B. Casendino
49 Cedar Street
Lexington, Massachusetts 02173
Dear Mr. Casendino:
I appreciate your willingness to assist the Town
with a design for a police shelter. If you would like to
discuss this with our Commission, we will have meetings on
August 3rd and 24th, at which you are welcome. August 3rd
would be better for us.
Speaking for myself, I would say the first question
is whether any kind of shelter should be erected. If it is
agreed that there should be something, the next question is
whether it should be seasonal or permanent. We would be in-
terested in your opinion. After that we would pass on the
appropriateness of the design.
I would suggest that you speak to Chief Corr about
the space needed to contain equipment. The Selectmen could
advise on the question of funds. I understand that there will
be a special town meeting in the Fall, which could contain an
article requesting appropriation of the sum needed.
