Re: Emery Paxk Proposal,Lecington Field&Garden Club
Dear Mrs. Gschwendmer:
I have previously sent a letter to you requesting a follow up meeting with the Hist4ric 1
Districts Commission at the Commission's February meeting. As of ttus date I have nat
had a reply. In your telephone ca11 to rne on September 29, you mentioned that the
commission would not accept the proposed wa.ter feature but was amenable to the rock
with a plaque honoring Mr. Emery. Was this intended to be a formal acceptance af the
Garden Club's proposal? You had mentioned tha,t your group needed more information
regarding the rock. My committee has narrowed the search for a suita.ble rock to four
choices. We will make our final decision at a meeting la#er this month. A picture will be
available for theIDC to view if needed.
Mr. Dave Pinsonneauit and his workers will deliver the rock to the site and install it. I
will have a stonemason prepare the rock for the plaque and also install it. T would like to
have this work completed by early May.
Please advise me as to wtiat fiuther steps have to be taken for final acceptance of this
project. Thank you.
Yours truly,

Re: Emery Park
Dear Ms. Gschwendtner:
'4- - When the new plan for Emery Park was designed, a space was to be set-
aside for the Lexington Field and Garden Club to place a stone azd plaque
in memory of Frederick Emery. Emery Park ests because of his foresight
and determination. He was an active member of the Garden Club and served
as its president for several tenns. Ginna Johnson told me that the space was
in the area near Yangtze River. I was never able to determine from the plan
exactly where the space was located. There was a stone in the park
previously but it did not survive the move. There is also an existing plaque
but its message is very brief.
The Garden Club would like to place a new stane and plaque in the park. We
really would like to have it near the Massachusetts Avenue sidewalk where
it would be more noticeable. As for the other area, we would like to put in a
small water feature. This would be very simple and not anything that would
be a problem as far as vandalism or maintenance is concerned. I have spoken
with Dave Pinsonneault regarding the matter and it is not a problem as far as
he's concemed. The club has a substantial amount put aside for the praject.
We would also assure that there was enough remaining in the fund for
maintenance. Maintenance would be minimal consisting of turning on the
electrical and water connection in the spring and turning it off in the fall. All
garden spaces are made more welcoming with the saund of water. It would
provide a tranquil spot for people to sit.
We would like to request that the Historic Districts Commission consider
our request. It would be helpful to have the decisivn prior to our August 2$
Executive Board meeting. Then we could bring the matter befare the general
membership for a vote at our September 10 meeting.

',,,,
I believe that this matter also needs to be brought to the attention of the
Bvard of Selectrnen, Design Advisory and the Lexington Center
Cammittees.
I do have a comrnittee in place for this project. David Williams is one of the
members also Joanne Fray, Gerry Whiting and Nell Walker.
I wonld like to thank you and your comrnittee for your anticipated
_ consideration of this matter.
Sincerely,
