A. LEF Community Grant: Student recognition and Improved Communication
• LHS receives a $7500 grant from LEF each year. Last year, the proposal was for
2 television screens that would broadcast highlights of events at LHS.
• Laura would like to change the focus and in combination with this year's grant
propose the following to LEF:
1. Purchase a 2 -sided outdoor sign for Worthen Road that would be updated
on a regular basis and highlight upcoming events and accomplishments of the
school community.
2. Purchase 4 Programmable Message Signs for each of the academic
buildings. These would be placed outside of Dean's offices and would highlight
reminders and information for students.
3. Complete the wall in the front entrance as you enter the school. The
proposal would be to install cloth boards that would welcome people to the school
and give information about the school community.
Laura would like a long -range plan for the front entrance of the school that would
include how to best use existing display areas.
B. School Culture Discussion /Feedback
The faculty is currently working in groups to help identify the culture of the
school. Five common beliefs have been identified:
1. Academic Excellence
2. Diversity
3. Community Service and Service Learning
4. All students can learn and are supported so they can learn
5. Collaboration
The council discussed what is meant by the term Academic Excellence.
• Is Educational Excellence a better term to use than Academic Excellence?
• Striving for optimal stimulation, engagement and achievement
• Learning for the sake of learning
• Students should feel comfortable taking risks and be willing to admit what
they don't know
• Continue to hire qualified excellent teachers and strive for consistency
within and between departments
• Foster resiliency, curiosity and social and emotional growth in students
• Have internally generated goals rather than conform to external
expectations
• Listen to students about what they would like to learn
• Should we have the requirement of 4 years of every major subject?
• Are assessments authentic?
