Paul Callahan (Police Liaison), Sandra Shaw (Recreation Committee Members Absent: Laurel Carpenter Minutes: The August 2012 minutes were accepted as corrected. LBAC Memberships: Jerry Van Hook and Laurel Carpenter have chosen not to continue serving on the LBAC. The committee thanks them for their years of service; Jerry has been a 20 -year charter member of both the Bicycle Advisory Committee and the Friends of the Bikeway. He has agreed to be an informal liaison from the Sidewalk Committee. Peggy reported that Laurel hopes to continue her contributions as a member of the Friends. Peggy reported that Patria Lanfranchi and Bob Dangel are applying for LBAC membership; the committee unanimously supported their nomination. John Frey will be recommended for reappointment. There was some discussion about whether there should be term limits for the committee chair. Mass Ave Bike Accommodations: The committee's recommendations regarding sharrows and wide shoulder striping in the section between Worthen Road and the 128 bridge were accepted. The committee discussed the recent temporary paving in Lexington Center and the desire to have sharrows as well as a pilot bike box. Richard Canale agreed to draft a letter to the DPW. DCR Grant for Minuteman Bikeway User Information: Members are asked to help with the existing features inventory. Toole Design will hold a training session in early October. Toole will post the edited Bikeway user survey on -line next week. Paper copies and flyers will be distributed it at this month's Farmers' Market. Peggy distributed the most recent version of one side of the proposed Bikeway map. The committee agreed that green spaces and contiguous bike routes should be shown. ,S US Mop pQ` 1 775 ` �(3 APRIL 11- k /NG'V Bikeway User Safety: The committee discussed with Sgt. Callahan the heavy use of the Bikeway during the Labor Day weekend. In a discussion about different ways to slow users at intersections, speed platforms and four way yields or stops were talked about. At the new Westview intersection, Trail X -Ing signs have not been installed, nor have any pavement warnings been applied on the street or on the Bikeway — these are important safety amenities. The root barrier work is underway, but the existing bumps and roots are not being shaved due to lack of appropriate equipment. Bikeway Counts: Margaret Stebbins is organizing the counts on September 13 and 15. In response to a question about the value of counting Bikeway users, Richard said that the statewide counts are important for future state and federal funding. Highly used routes establish the need for the construction of additional routes and the repair of existing routes. Other Business: ... Hayden Ave is being repaved with bike lanes. ...The Planning Board and the Economic Development Committee have launched LexEngage to encourage regular feedback from citizens on a variety of town business including traffic, bicycle and auto parking, etc. Peggy will send link to committee members. ... The Mass Ave area in front of 1720 Mass Ave will be expanded to two spots on the weekend of September 23 to accommodate a special "parklet" alongside the bicycle parking. The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm. Record of the Discussion of the Friends of Lexington Bikeways The treasurer reported no expenses for the month. The group agreed to refrain from seeking donations for plowing until the funds are needed. Bob Hausslein is coordinating volunteers for the September18 Farmer's Market Bike Corral. Peggy and Sandra Shaw are organizing a bike corral for the Country Fair on September 22. The planned location is in front of the swimming pool complex from 11 am to 4 pm. The group voted to hire MassBike to help run the event and to pay them $524 to provide two staff people. signage, valet slips, insurance, a tent, table, chairs, expertise, and media advertising. FoLB will provide control barriers, additional staff, a clear area to set up the corral, and advertising. In addition we voted to rent a truck for up to $100 to transport poles and racks ,S US Mop pQ` 1 775 ` �(3 APRIL 11- k /NG'V borrowed from PMC in Needham. Richard, Joel, and Jerry volunteered to help. Stew will be available later in the day.
