DCR Grant for Minuteman Bikeway User Information: Sandra, Peggy, Bob Hausslein, and Stew along with 10 others from Bedford and Arlington attended the inventory training session given by Toole Design to prepare volunteers to assess signage and other amenities on and near the Bikeway. Toole is also scheduling a 3 -hour ride along the full length of the Bikeway. The bike map development is progressing. Bike Safety: Members discussed the apparent increase in the number of bicycle accidents on both roadways and the bikeway. The committee would like to work with Public Safety to develop a systematic method of tracking accidents involving cyclists and the causes. Peggy has suggested this to both Capt Ferro and Sgt Callahan. Bob Dangel will investigate methods that might be helpful. Winter Plowing: The committee talked about plans to have Jimmy McLaughlin again plow the Bikeway. Peggy will talk to Peter Kelley to firm up the arrangement. We hope to repeat our agreement with the town to have the gates open and barrels protecting the entrances. ACROSS Lexington: We voted to write a letter of support for a CPR Grant submitted by the Greenways Corridor Committee. Jerry Van Hook, in a conversation with Peggy, expressed a need for walk - your -bike signs on board walks. Bikeway counts: Margaret Stebbins organized the counts on September 13 and 15. It appears that commuter use continues to increase. Saturday counts, presumably more recreational, were down; however the day started out cold and rainy. ,S US Mop pQ` 1 775 ` �(3 APRIL 11- k /NG'V ... Peggy is preparing a draft of the 350 -word annual town report and will share it with members prior to turning it in. ... The Mass Ave Corridor project meeting will conflict with our next meeting; therefore members agreed to postpone November's meeting until November 15. The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. Record of the Discussions of the Friends of Lexington Bikeways The treasurer reported two large expenditures this month both for the bike corral at the 300 opening ceremonies ($524 to Mass. Bike and $185 for truck rental). Many of us felt unacknowledged by the 300 committee for our efforts that day. We did park over 100 bikes, however. We received a donation of $100 in memory of Phil Dinsky. Patriot's Day Parade: Marita suggested we have a presence in the parade next April. Since many on our committee are also Conservation Stewards, Stew suggested we coordinate with them to have combined participation. Marita will coordinate with Don Grant. Farmer's Market: Bob Hausslein is coordinating volunteers for October 16. Other Business: ... Brush clearing and mowing are progressing on the bikeway. If anyone has specific areas of concern contact Bob Hausslein or Stew and they will clear the area. ...Abe Benghiat, a junior at LHS, has proposed that Lexington host a bike -to- school week next May, similar to a program that was part of Newton's Bike /Walk Week. In the Newton program, students who walked or rode to school received a stamp in a book that then could be redeemed for merchandize at local stores. Peggy and Abe discussed the idea of having a full -blown Bike /Walk/Bus Week in Lexington that would involve more than the high school activity. Peggy wrote to a number of town staff people for their reaction and is awaiting a response. In order for such a program to be successful, the committee agreed it would be important for the town to endorse and support the concept. ... Marita contacted Martha Wood regarding an article about Jerry Van Hook and his contribution to the LBAC over the years. ... Richard Spencer reported that the Tri Town Bikeway, Woburn, Winchester, and Stoneham, is slow going but will eventually happen.
