SITE BASED COUNCIL: Comprised of parents, administration /staff and community
members; meets monthly to discuss school issues, including the School Improvement Plan
and more recently the Bridge renovations
AGENDA
1. School Improvement Plan
• Goals 1 & 2 are district wide; Goal 3 for Bowman, Bridge, Estabrook, Hastings
because of big renovation or facilities upkeep
• Parents on SBC - Take plan home, come back next meeting with any questions
and feedback.
2. Bridge Renovations
• K -2 moved into space last weekend! Parents seem happy that kids are in
permanent space. (And happy that school opening was not delayed.) Teachers
and staff have been very patient and cooperative.
There is still a long list of items (from original 8/17 deadline) that need to be
finished or rectified by construction company, including:
i. Heat ( #1 priority) which has a drop dead deadline of 10/15.
Administration (including School Committee and Superintendent)
working on plan in case deadline is not meet.
ii. Hall floors to be done December break (needs 1 week)
iii. Sinks in wrong classrooms
iv. Speakers /PA systems (currently using 2 systems for old /new parts of
school)
v. Bells
vi. HVAC /roof flashing
vii. Central corridor (old office area) was supposed to start 9/1
viii. ...etc.
Safety is #1 concern. A lot of independent and town inspectors are constantly
inspecting work (daily, weekly).
Discussion on construction company and reason for delays. Construction
company is backcharged for all costs to school /district due to their delays (tent
rental, staff compensation, etc.).
There was some parent concern that, due to construction delay and Curriculum
Morning (without a Back to School Night), there was difficulty accessing teachers
and classroom space to help their students transition into beginning of school
(especially new and /or kindergarten families). Some feeling of confusion over
what the students will be learning in class this year.
o Meg tries to address all concerns and communicate with parents,
including sending pictures individually to show space when it can't be
shown person.
• Parents can help communicate with each other, pointing each other to the
announcements about Curriculum Morning, construction blog, etc.
• Parents can always communicate with teachers via email for specific
issues.
• Teachers will try to communicate more about what kids will be doing this
year via their class newsletters, etc.
• Teachers have been great about welcoming students and anticipating
them so that students don't feel lost.
