Lexington 2020 Vision Committee
Minutes of Meeting of June 8, 2012
A meeting of the 2020 Vision Committee was held on Friday, June 8 at 7:45 a.m. in the
Selectmen's Meeting Room in the Town Office Building at 1625 Massachusetts Avenue. A
quorum of 8 was present.
Members Present: Fernando Quezada, Jane Warren, Dan Krupka, Andrew Dixon, Bhumip Khasnabish,
George Burnell, Marian Cohen, Margaret Coppe
Staff: Candy McLaughlin, Michelle Stevens
Public Present: Nancy Adler
Members Absent: Chuck Benson, Peter Lee, Alan Wrigley, Peter Enrich
Fernando said Janice Frascatore is unable to continue to serve on the Committee. The Committee thanked
her for her participation.
The meeting acted on the following items:
The Committee approved the minutes from May 4, 2012.
Discussed report from subcommittee to broaden Asian - American participation in local
government: Dan said the subcommittee had their first meeting. He said their next steps are to meet with
the Police and Fire Chiefs. Also, he said they are still looking for a volunteer from the Korean community
to serve on the subcommittee. Marian asked if the Town departments provide cultural awareness training
for employees. Candy said the Police Department is holding a panel for their staff on the topic of cultural
and religious differences. Fernando said the Committee should be cognizant of respecting cultural
differences when attempting to remove barriers. Dan said the subcommittee will present a more formal
report to the 2020 Vision Committee at their July meeting.
Discussed updated plans for community survey: Marian said the working group has not developed
anything formal yet, but they are still aiming to distribute the survey in late fall or early winter. Candy
said $10,000 is budgeted in FY 13 for the survey. Marian said it could fund an ad campaign or a mailing
to raise awareness of the survey within the community.
Continued discussion of what happens after 2020: Fernando asked the Committee if it's time to revise
the Committee's charge. Candy said the 2020 date was chosen originally because it was 20 years out at
the time. Marian said the Committee is valuable because they are the only Town committee that considers
long -term goals for the community as a whole. She said the year 2020 should not be an ending point for
the Committee. George said, although the Committee's purpose is long -term planning, the Committee
should also review the Board of Selectmen's short-term goals developed annually, as well as the goals of
the Planning Board and School Committee.
