2020 Vision Committee Meeting
Tuesday, February 12, 2008
Selectmen’s Meeting Room
Meeting Time: 7:45 A.M.
In attendance:
Fernando Quezada (Chair), Marian Cohen, Ann Redmon, Peter Enrich,
Carl Valente, Candy McLaughlin, & Matt Courchene
Meeting began:
7:52 am
The minutes from the previous meeting were approved.
Economic Development Task Force/Town Meeting
The Committee discussed the Economic Development Task Force (EDTF) public
o
meeting at Cary Hall on February 26th at 7pm. The Cecil Group will be presenting
their findings at this forum.
Citizen's petitions for Town Meeting have caused some issues for the EDTF. The
o
Task Force doesn't want to be placed in an uncomfortable position of providing
recommendations instead of information.
2020 members discussed strategies the EDTF could take in preparing for Town
o
Meeting. It was suggested that the Task Force report to the Town Meeting on their
analytical work for informational purposes, before any zoning articles are taken up.
2020 Vision Committee Report to Town Meeting
The committee discussed what kind of report or materials they would like to present at
Town Meeting. The Moderator has asked committees to limit oral reports because of the
large number of articles on the warrant. The group decided on a written report
mentioning outcomes of recent task forces with advance notice of a fall public forum.
Demographics
The scoping group has not made its final report to the 2020 Committee, although a draft
was prepared some time ago. Fernando said that he would speak to scoping group chair
Peter Lee just to check in with the project and confirm the report is on track.
In addition, they are looking for individuals to contribute to the upcoming Demographic
Change Task Force. 2020 Vision committee members discussed three major attributes
that would best serve the Task Force:
Leadership skills
??
Analytical background and knowledge of demographic data
??
New voices (i.e. youth, minority, etc.)
??
The group discussed ways to publicize the work of the Committee and reach out to the
community. Carl has prepared a request for membership suggestions that can be
circulated to committees, Town Meeting members, etc. The goal is to have a list of
potential Task Force members for the next 2020 Committee meeting.
Committee Website
Candy described a project to streamline the Town’s website, and asked for ideas for the
2020 Vision Committee’s page. Reports, minutes, etc. will continue to be published on
the site. In addition, current news and events involving 2020 Vision could be publicized;
for example, photos from the upcoming EDTF meeting could be posted. Another
possibility worth exploring is a feature on the website where the committee can post a
question and then accept comments from residents.
Recruitment
Fernando reminded the committee of the ongoing need to reach out for new members.
He will check back with the clergy association, and perhaps ask Peter Lee whether
another person from the Chinese American Association of Lexington (CAAL) might be
interested. Peter Enrich suggested contacting Edith Sandy after Town Meeting to request
participation from TMMA.
