DINAPOLI 9 Brown Road • Lexington, Massachusetts 02420 May 2, 202 Town of Lexington Historic Districts Coxrunission 1625 Massachusetts Avenue Lexington, MA 02420 Ladies and Gentlemen: A business commirinent has precluded my attendance at the May 2, 2002 Historic District Commission meeting. I have asked our chairperson,Mrs. Gschwendtner,to read this letter to the Cominission to provide my view on the application that seeks to add wood benches to the area adjacent to the Buckman Tavern, Visitor's Center and Memorial to the USS Lexington ' servicemen. The Battle Green district is sensitive in our community and challenging to regulate because of the historic significance of the area and its proximity to our business district. A balance must be achieved between the needs of the many residents and tourists that visit our town, the business owners that have always respected this historic district, and the preservation of the historic character of the district. In particular, we are challenged to protect and preserve the Battle Green, which is the birthplace of American liberiy, and a living monument to the contributions of countless people in the fight for independence. The proposed plan to add benches to the azea in front of the USS Lexington monument is a worthy submission in its promotion of respect for the contributions of servicemen to our country. However, the installation of benches will also impact the character and solemnity of the area. Benches in front of this monument will interrupt the open feel of the area and the preserved simplicity of this historic place. Benches will promote expansion of the recreational use of the adjacent Minutemen bike path into this more solemn azea intended for individual reflection and respect. Benches, if installed, will only be followed by trash barrels, bike racks, and other structures, further disrupting the character of the Battle Green. I urge the Commission to reject bench installation at or near the monument. Bench locations in other areas can be found where they will be well utilized and more appropriate in our district.
