Plan for Design Advisory Committee(DAC) and Historical District Committee (HDC) meetings. 2 Review signage plan proposal for GCC meeting in September 3. Review plans for pilot route signage installation Minutes for GCC Subcommittee meeting September 4, 2012 Attendance- Alex, Eileen, Rick Agenda items are listed above. 1. We reviewed presentations for the Design Advisory Committee and the HDC Hearing. Some minor edits were agreed on and made. 2. This led to the discussion of the signage plan for the ACROSS Lexington Routes. We reviewed, discussed and summarized the current plan and the feedback to it. The current plan calls for the ACROSS Lexington logo to mark the route. When there is a change of direction, the plan calls for a white arrow on a black background- in the shape of a circle. A blue arrow on a white background in the shape of a circle is in the plan to identify Connector trails. Feedback from the HDC and Conservation Commission was all consistent. Members wondered why the directional arrows weren't done in blue instead of black- to match the logo color. Second, using a blue arrow for the connector trails would cause additional confusion. The assumption was that if people saw the ACROSS Lexington logo in blue and a blue arrow on a white background, they would think the arrow kept you on an ACROSS Lexington trail. Based on the feedback above, and after reviewing trail marking systems in Wellesley, Bedford and Burlington, as well as discussing the trail blazing system of the Appalachian trail and the Bay Circuit trail, the subcommittee decided to recommend using a white arrow on a blue background (the blue background to match the blue of the logo- PMS 299) for directional arrows. The subcommittee realizes that white arrows on a black background are used on the Western Greenway but did not think this implied that we couldn't use a white arrow on a blue background for the ACROSS Lexington route system. There is some consistency since the arrows themselves are white on both systems. The conservation commission told the GCC that the conservation commission will choose the marking system for the conservation trails sometime in the future. When the Conservation Commission decides to choose a color for connector arrows, the GCC will recommend that they not use a blue arrow on a white background since it will cause confusion. There are many other color choices available. Wellesley uses 6 different colors on their trail system 3. We discussed the plans to get the pilot route installed by October 15. We concluded that we could get the posts ordered and installed independent of the other signage. We also decided to get the logo signs ordered as soon as we could. The posts and signs could be installed as soon as they arrived. The final choice of the directional arrow would be decided at the September 24 full GCC meeting and, assuming a decision was reached, could be ordered just after the meeting. If the directional arrows could be ordered on September 25, the would arrive in Lexington by October 10th, giving us a few days to install them to make the October 15 goal.
