Minutes
from the January meeting were reviewed and approved as corrected.
Hartwell Avenue update
: Terry Gleason's monthly summary of traffic queues and
driver reactions for January was reviewed. It appears things have settled down, there is no
new feedback, and complaints are less frequent.
North – South Bike Route
: Abe and Peggy met since the previous meeting and
discussed North - South bike route(s) through town. It was decided to form a group of
interested people and discuss what is needed for cyclists and pedestrians to get from one
side of the map to the other. We need to decide what the objectives are, how ambitious
we want to be, and whether it is to be a commuter or recreational path. There are a few
challenges about routing, particularly near Burlington.
Tri-Town Meeting:
Marita reported on a tri-town Minuteman Bikeway meeting she had
attended earlier in February. There was agreement at that meeting that there should be a
stencil for identifying the towns’ borders by painting on the pavement. A stencil would
cost $400. It was also proposed that there be 2-sided street signs at crossings with the
town seal or other markings. Abe suggested instead to have stickers printed and put on
the gates, as a much less expensive way to inform Bikeway users of the town they are in.
Maritta suggested placing town seals on bollards. Abe will look into pricing of stickers.
2008 Trail Project Plans:
Mike’s preliminary notions on trail projects this year were
passed on. In summary, there probably will be a total of 4 or 5 work days on the Vine
Brook trails. We’ll get one of them in before school lets out in June, so as to take
advantage of High School volunteers. Then there will be one or two during the summer,
and maybe something after school resumes in the fall.
Bikeway Plowing:
As Arlington seems to be so successful in its plowing of the Bikeway,
there was further discussion of whether we should pursue this now for Lexington. It was
suggested that perhaps it could be done just at the beginning and end of the season – so as
to at least extend the cycling season.
Meeting adjourned.
Record of Friends of Lexington Bikeways votes and discussions.
Treasurer’s Report
: Rich reported that the treasury now has a Balance of $2,068.75
.
MAPC Bike Racks:
Marita reported receiving a verbal OK from the Post Office
manager for installation of the bike rack at the agreed upon spot.
Clarke Bridge project
: Peg reported that Steve Flynn (Clarke School Principal) is
managing the bridge project. DPW and one unnamed person are willing to do the
construction. We will probably have a new bridge by spring
Farmers’ Market:
Carolyn Siccama notified us that due to the popularity last year of
“Bike to the Market Day”, this year the Farmers’ Market committee wants to have two.
The dates identified are June 24 and October 7. She also asked for volunteers to help.
George, Marita, Peg, and Stew (in absentia) volunteered to help.
rd
Annual Bikeway Cleanup:
It was agreed that May 3, the first Saturday in May again
this year, will be the date for the cleanup. Peg thought it important to have water
delivered, perhaps by Mike as he did last year. We should verify that Starbucks will
provide water again this year. And we should establish territories of responsibility in
advance.
Other business:
George volunteered to write a letter to the Concord Journal as an abutter
to the Minuteman in support of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail. The announcement that
Cathy Buckley Lewis will speak at the upcoming Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail
meeting. Her topic will be trail usage counts to be done this year. It was announced that
Storrow Drive will probably be closed to cars during some weekend hours in 2008.
Meeting adjourned
