MEETING MINUTES
Committee Name: Bicycle Advisory Committee

Members Present: Manta Hartshorn, Stew Kennedy (BAC chair), Richard Canale
(Planning), Jerry VanHook, Mike Tabaczynski
Others Present: Rich Spencer, Christine Lokin-Kim, Jim Nevins, Bob Dangel
Members Absent: Sandra Shaw (Recreation), Abe Shenker (FoLB Chair), Hank Manz
(Selectmen's Liaison), George Gagliardi, Peggy Enders, John Frey
Issues discussed
Jim Nevins from the Burlington Bicycle Path Committee shared a brochure of existing
and proposed bike paths in Burlington. Since there is no rail trail corridore, they work
with developers to provide bikepaths within Burlington which connect to neighboring
towns
Landlocked portions of Burlington Mike Tabaczynski is working with citizens
concerned about the development of the portion of Burlington which is separated from
Burlington by Route 3 They would like to prevent the land from being over developed.
Membership Manta, Peggy, and George are up for reappointment Manta agreed to
serve another term. Stew will check with George and Peggy
Snowplowing Status Stew in on the Selectemen's agenda to make a case for plowing
the bikepath. Prior to the meeting he will meet with the police and the town manager in
order to anticipate potential questions Friends of Lexington Bikeways are encouraged to
attend the Sept 8th meeting.
Subcommittee Report
CM district (Hartwell Ave) infrastructure Tern Gleason, Jeff Roth, Stew and Jern met and
will continue to communicate via email regarding Hartwell Ave infrastructure Rich Canale
and the Planning Board walked both sides of Hartwell Ave and will take into consideration,
pedestrian, bicycle, and mass transit needs when reviewing development.

Boardwalk Constructions Mike reported on the construction of three boardwalks in Lower
Vine Brook in August. The group is becoming ver` efficient.
Request for Bikeway use Manta requested permission for Rising Star Quitters to place a
sandwich board sign next to the bikewa` on October 4th and 5th The group consensus was to
grant permission. Stew will ask the Selectmen for permission to use the lawn b` the Visitors
Center for our October 5th Hall-of-Fame Celebration.
Bikeway Maintenance: Stew will schedule a DPW ride to determine maintenance needs Prior
to that we will ride the path to set priorities
Bike Friday Commuter Rides The next group ride will be on August 22nd beginning at
Hancock Street and going into Boston.

Treasurer's Report Rich reported current balance is $1613 68
Paper Streets Manta and Peggy met with Gerry Rhodes, Lexington Building Inspector
He recommended we research the deeds of the abutters of the paper streets to see if any
fees were paid for transfer of the paper streets to the landowners Peggy, Stew, and
Manta will go to the registry and then ask the selectmen to ask town counsel to review
our research to determine ownership The Sidewalk Committee agreed to co-sponsor our
future petition for access to paper streets
Hall-of-Fame Celebration October 5, 2008 The rolling celebration will begin in
Cambridge at noon and proceed westward at appropriate intervals Founders of the
Bikeway will be honored. There will be on-going activities in each of the four towns,
Cambridge, Arlington, Lexington, and Bedford. Peggy will coordinate fundraising. Jack
Johnson will do the press releases Stew will contact the Cycle Loft and request use of
the Farmers' Market tents Chris, Manta, Stew, and Peggy will meet prior to our next
meeting to discuss the format Many ideas were floated including
Penny-farthing photos, music, historic photographs, Minuteman Quiz, Children's Bike
ride by Carolyn Siccama, book signing by Carolyn Siccama. Anticipated expenses to
date are $76 00 for bookmarks, $175 for a 3' x 10' banner, and $62 00 for lawn signs
Bike Commuting Forum. We reviewed Laurel Carpenter's plans to hold a forum
which will promote bike commuting. We discussed having this a week or two after the
Hall of Fame Celebration when enthusiasm is high.
