Myla Kabat-Zinn Experience with energy efficient street lights.
Steve Kropper Past energy manager for Boston’s public hospitals
Bill Hadley Bill Hadley, Director of Public Works
Paul Chernick Energy consulting firm in Arlington. Electric, gas, utility planning.
Has advised Town on electric rate forecasts.

Issues discussed
Mr. Manz, Selectman opened the meeting, read the Committee’s charter, solicited motions for committee
meeting schedule.
Brief discussion of efforts of previous energy, lighting committees.
Discussion of mission. Public education or municipal facilities energy management.
Discussion of high energy use at Clark, and whether there are options for reducing energy use.
Discussion of high energy use at Cary Library.
Hank Manz requested input on how town manager should approach upcoming gasoline contract
negotiations.
Christopher Haines briefed the Committee on energy audits, and balancing comfort and efficient design.
Keith Ohmart (affiliated with Global Warming Action Coalition) discussed value of good reporting data
on energy use to set priorities. Recommended consideration of ICLEI's (International Council for Local
Environmental Intiatives) Cities for Climate Protection program, ”off-the-shelf” program to track energy
use and support prioritization of conservation options.
Charles Hornig, liaison to Planning Board requests guidance on best practices for street lighting.
Discussion ensued on experience with compact fluorescent lights in town streets.
Discussion of indoor air quality Vs. energy conservation, and reference to Clark experience.
Kropper offered a narrow facilities focused mission for the committee comprising:

developing reporting on energy use by town facilities
??
“low cost, no cost screwdriver and brains maintenance improvements
??
planning for longer payoff 1-5 year capital improvements
Paul Chernick raised issue of reporting of energy use.
Hank Manz offered that the town manager could present list of proposed improvements as well as
reporting and data collection in place for the next meeting. Hank suggested these town staff as key to
energy conservation.
