Lexington Tree Committee Minutes of June 5, 2008
Attending: John Frey-Chair Members Anne Senning, Jewel Kuljian, Karen Longeteig,
Jim Wood, Nell Walker, Gerry Paul, David Pinsonneault, Jeanne Krieger, Norm Cohen,
Jane Beswick
1. Jim Wood was appointed as scribe and the minutes of May 8, 2008 were
approved.
2. Tree Wardens agenda items: Dave Pinsonneault
a) Tree removal applications and activity: 584 calls/452 closed; 706 trees to
be removed/511 now removed; 1696 trees to be planted/ 1127 planted.
The School Street tree has been removed. Hearing plans for Mass Ave and
Woburn are scheduled for 20 June at 8 and 8:30 AM respectively.
b) Tree Inventory-Anne Senning- We have hired the second intern. State has
not sent the money yet, but says our Grant proposal is OK.
c) Tree Nursery-Jim Wood- Irrigation lines are in place. Barbara Kent will
assist again this year by watering the Nursery as needed. Anne Senning
wrote and the Minuteman published the Tree nursery article.
d) Commemorative trees 5,6 & 7 have not been ordered. John Frey and Norm
Cohen and others will meet to discuss considerations of commemorative
trees on the Lexington Green. Jeanne Krieger noted that the Selectmen
have authority over all activities/actions taken on the Lexington Green.
e) 3 new East Lexington Trees: The check has not been received. Watering
of these trees is on the Town watering schedule.
f) Belfry Hill project: Anne Senning, with help, will mark all of the Norway

Maple saplings before leaf fall. The plan is to meet on the 9 of June at
9AM. Green marking paint will be used to indicate those kept while red
marking paint will indicate those to be removed. Girdling was discussed as
a means to prevent sprouting.
g) 9 LFGC trees have been purchased and planted by the DPW. These trees
are on the Town tree watering list.
h) One of the Oak trees on the NSTAR parking lot may need replacement.
The top appears to have died. The parking lot has a dead Arborvitae.
3. Tree fund donations total $4951.00 not including Commemorative tree gifts.
Thank you notes to 66 Tree Fund donors signed and sent 5/23/08
4. Lexington Farmers Market Green Way Booth. All green organizations have an
opportunity to have booth time during the 2- 6:30 PM time the Market is open on
Tuesdays. The Tree Committee has Tuesday, 8 July as our day. Possible topics
are: Tree Inventory, Tree Farm, Belfry Hill, Commemorative Trees, Structural
Soil, Chestnut tree planting, Friends of Trees, Bittersweet removal; other? Ellen
Frye is the list keeper (green organizations booth days).

5. Tree Manual meeting is at 2PM on the 19 of June at Karen’s.

6. Friends of Trees-Meetings are the 4 Thursday of the month. A notice will be sent
out with the planned date. At that meeting the Bittersweet removal date will be
determined.
7. The Tree Committee web site is almost complete. However, the Selectmen have
not determined if the Town will host any committee sites.
8. Chestnut seed planting will be done this year. We need to get the formal
agreement signed by the Town and forwarded to The American Chestnut
Foundation for their signature. And, we need to now go back to the Conservation
Commission and identify a piece of land and get their approval to plant chestnuts
on it. Action Jim Wood

10. Tree canopy in future parking lots, a zoning bylaw amendment? Subcommittee?
This item was postponed.
11. Articles for newspaper: LFGC newspaper article about grant funded trees. This
article should include the information that the LFGC funded trees for the Town.
Jewel will write the article in collaboration with Bobby Best, publicity chair for
the LFGC.
Next regular meeting: July 10, 2008, 7:30AM in Room 111.
