HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-08-10-TREE-min Minutes August 10, 2006 Lexington Tree Committee Lexington, Massachusetts Present: John Frey, Chair, Susan Solomon, Gerry Paul, Nell Walker, Anne Senning, Karen Longeteig, Jim Wood, Jeanne Krieger, Visitor Pamela Lyons 1 . Jim Wood was appointed scribe and the minutes of July 13, 2006 were approved as modified. 1A. John Frey will prepare a letter to the Board of Selectmen(copies to Craig Weeks & Bill Hadley) regarding the center sidewalk as follows: Recommend soft base, Structural Soil, and brick for the center sidewalk. Committee voted unanimously on a resolution to write and send this letter. 2a.Tree removal applications and activity-No Report b. Tree removal Proposals-28 Mason Street, (Chapter 87 hearing 8/8/06) Marrett Rd/Waltham St. intersection-Not discussed 3. Memorial Tree Status: No action. Dates for planting memorial trees 2&3 and date for the removal of the dead tree on the Green are unknown. 4. Planning Board By-Law Recommendation-Modified recommended by-law to require a Tree Management Plan when a developer/owner requests a special permit from the Lexington Planning Board. Karen Longeteig will submit the recommendation to the Planning Board. Additional discussion was held on how this would dove tail with the Lexington Tree Manual. 5.Motion was made and unanimously approved to credit Dan Cohen for special editing of the Videotapes of the lecture series. 6. Planning and Education Grant Progress: a. Mailer-copies still available b. Lecture Series-Sue Solomon will do the publicity for Bill Cullina’s 9/13/06 lecture c. Inventory-Belfry Park inventory completed. Anne Senning has completed a draft report on three distinct areas that have been inventoried. Many thanks to Anne for her hard work and dedication in accomplishing these tasks. 6A. A Sugar Maple was taken down on Belfry Hill. At the next meeting we will ask Dave Pinsonneault why this tree was removed. 7. Long Term Tree Committee Strategy. Gerry Paul will bring minutes from these meetings for the complete Tree Committee to review and approve. 8. Memorial Trees: Tree Committee (Sue Solomon) to develop and send out one page biographical recommendation for persons buying Memorial Trees to follow. 9. Memorial Tree Book”Lexington Commemorative Trees” Jim Wood to get the book embossed. 10. Tree Nursery-The Conservation Commission has requested a Tree Nursery Plan. Jim Wood will prepare a plan and bring it to the September14th Tree Committee meeting for review and approval. 11. Tree Talk Articles for the Newspaper. We need to get started on this effort again. Anne suggested focusing on Native trees as Street trees. Jim Wood owes an article on funding difficulties, override impact and Town Meeting indifference to Public Trees. 12. Tree Revolving Fund Status: No report-Jim Wood to find out balance for next meeting. 13. Tree Committee reappointments: Nell Walker and Karen Longeteig will accept reappointments. 14.Review of mulching, weed barrier and tree planting issues on Bikeway slope of the “CVS” parking area. Jeanne Krieger will explore the interface between the Tree Committee and DPW with Carl Valente. Pam Lyons suggested we look at the Waltham City Hall landscaping-its very attractive.
