HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-03-09-TREE-min Minutes, March 9, 2006 Lexington Tree Committee Lexington MA Present: John Frey, Chairman; Jim Jones, Karen Longeteig, Anne Senning, Gerry Paul, Nell Walker, James Wood, Jeanne Kreiger 1. Scribe and Minutes. Gerry Paul was appointed scribe. The minutes of the Feb. 9, 2006 meeting were approved as amended. 2. Strategy Committee. We agreed to put an item on next months agenda to form a strategy/planning subcommittee. 3. Report Under the Tree By-Law: David Pinsonneault was not in attendance 4. Center Sidewalk Reconstruction. Jeanne Kreiger reported that there is a proposal to rebuild the sidewalk/curbs on the south side of Mass. Av. in Lexington Center from the alley near Michelson's shoe store to Waltham street. The current proposals are for concrete with brick trim or all brick sidewalk. We need to meet with the Engineering department to make sure that trees are taken into consideration. 5. Video taping of Lecture Series. Gerry Paul reported that the first lecture has been edited and will be shown starting today. 6. Planning and Education Grant Progress. Mailer - - The mailer was mailed last week. Some members did not receive copies in the mail yet. Karen will check at the post office and call Jim Wood if we must follow up with the mailing company. Lecture series - - Nell will contact Caroline Beckwith to make sure the room is reserved, that the meeting is on the library computer and that there is no meeting booked directly before ours. Gerry will pick up and return the video cameras. Anne will handle publicity. Jim Jones will contact the Lexington Field and Garden Club. Tree Inventory - - There was discussion concerning whether 2 or 3 person teams are optimal. The need to redesign the training was discussed. A proposal was made to start the inventory this year after May 15. 7. Arbor Day Tree Planting - John reported that a River Birch will be planted at the bottom of Belfry hill, near the sidewalk. It was agreed that this was a good place for the planting. 8. Memorial Tree Book - James Wood volunteered to investigate the type of book which should be used and to design the format of the book contents. 9. Memorial Tree Labels - Nell volunteered to investigate appropriate tree labels. 10. Participation in Earth Day activities. It was agreed that the Tree Committee would not participate officially in Earth Day activities. However, Karen will be there in a non-Tree Committee capacity and make our mailers available. The plan is to have a broad participation next year in which we not only distribute seedlings but provide information about where to plant trees, etc. 11. Town Tree Nursery Proposal - James Wood presented a concept for a Lexington Town Tree Nursery. Jeanne Krieger will contact the Town Manager to get his input on whether he sees any general issues with the proposal. The committee voted unanimously to endorse the development of a strategy for lower cost long term planting of trees. Nell agreed to host a meeting after April 15 to view a video which explains a low cost tree growing approach. The best times seem to be Tues, Wed, or Thurs at 3:00. 12. New Subdivisions - James Wood raised a concern about the need to develop a by-law which covers trees in new subdivisions. We will continue this discussion at the next meeting. 13. The committee congratulated James Wood on his re-election and Gerry Paul on his initial election to Town Meeting. The meeting adjourned at 9:45 am.
