Minutes August 11, 2005 Lexington Tree Committee, Lexington, MA
Present: Karen Longeteig, presiding chairperson, Jim Jones, Jeanne Krieger, Selectman

Susan Solomon, Nell Walker. Guest; Gerry Paul
1. Anne Senning was named as scribe.
Minutes of July 14, 2005
2. were accepted.
Trees in Budget
3. . Ask for $25,000 for trees as line item in budget this coming
year. Jeanne reported that trees wouldn’t be considered a capital expenditure. 2005-06
will be an override year. The Tree Committee will need to advocate for trees to be in the
next budget.
Trees in the Planning Process

2. Designing strips for trees along new sidewalks. 3. New DPW building 30% ‘green’ a
LEED’s rating of Silver. 4. Outreach to current composting facility. 5. Articles for the

Reports on Tree Activity
5. D. Pinsonneault . 368 calls (sites) through permitting
process. 400 have been approved for removal of which 179 have been removed. 905 are
required to be replanted. 401 have been replanted.
Tree By Law
Dave raised issue that the needs to have a new section, which states
that trees that are left on site during construction need to be sufficiently protected from
compaction during duration of project.
Replacement of Trees,
12 or 13 townspeople have requested which have been
removed by the Town. Dave plans to use $1,000 Nstar grant to fund these at a cost of
$225 a tree. The Town will plant the trees in the fall.
Memorial Tree Program
Several people called about , but were warded off by
the price. Instead they donated $40 or $50 to the Selectman’s Tree Fund.
ReLeaf Grant
Urban Forestry signed off on after inspecting trees behind CVS
parking lot.
Bittersweet
Upon consultation with the tree warden may be cut on public land.
6. Dave Pavlik, Engineering department, taught Committee members how to
Right of Way in the Field
determine when doing Tree Inventory.
Summary: Look for the crown of the road, split it in half.
Crown may have split in a seam, split the road in half.
Stonewalls are usually at the end of the right of way.
Back of the sidewalk is usually the end of the right of way.
Look for monuments or control points, at the turns in the road, or in front of
property lines. Control points are stones, four by four inches, with circular holes
in them, four feet deep. Wear safety vests.
