Minutes - Lexington Town Tree Committee
November 18, 2004 @ 7:30 AM
Town Office Building: Rm. 111
Attendance: J. Frey, J. Jones, K. Longeteig, D. Pinsonneault, A. Senning, S. Solomon, N. Walker, J. Wood & J.
Krieger (Selectman Representative)
1. Minutes of the September 16 and October 14 meetings were approved as amended.
2. Applications for Removal Report: (D. Pinsonneault) Planted in 2004: 17 plus 7 at Lexington High School. A
full report on the 724 required replantings (since passage of Tree By-law) is forthcoming. Thanks were extended to
D. Pinsonneault for his excellent negotiating skills.
3. Tree Inventory Work Completed for 2004:
Between October 21 and November 11, approximately 450 street trees were surveyed by Tree Committee members
and enthusiastic volunteers that included Lexington High School interns.
The surveyed trees were in a 'super block' along Massachusetts Ave. between Woburn St. & the Green and on the
side streets (& Bike Path) to Meriam & Grant Sts.
A working meeting for analyzing this data has been set up for Thursday, December 2 at 9:30 AM at the Town
Office Building.
4. Massachusetts ReLeaf Grant Application: (J. Wood)
Their emphasis, this year, is on suburban, not city areas, The application has been mailed.
5. Memorial Tree Fund:
Will contact the Trustees of Public Trusts for guidance. Object is to maintain a $5,000 base and have the Tree
Committee control the spending. Sending a brochure and donation appeal with Lexington tax bills suggested. It is
important that donations go into a revolving Tree Fund, not
the General Fund.
6. By-law Amendment:
It will be reviewed by the Town Counsel.
7. Tree Removal Application Fee:
P. Mehr is advocating a separate fee. No action was taken by the Committee because the fee is already
incorporated into the building permit. Even if there were a separate fee, there would be no guarantee that the fee
will go for trees, since those fees go into the General Fund.
8. Newburyport Tree Manual:
The Newburyport Tree Committee noted help from Lexington's Manual in preparing their own.
9. Rindge Park:
Two trees were vandalized. One was replanted and one was replaced.
Meeting adjourned at 9:20 AM.
Next regular meeting: Thursday, December 9, 2004 at 7:30 AM in Rm. 111, Town Office Bldg.
Working meeting: Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 9:30 AM in Rm. 111, Town Office Bldg.
Respectfully submitted:
Susan Snell Solomon
