Minutes - Lexington Town Tree Committee
Feb. 12, 2004 @ 7:30 AM
Town Office Building: Rm. 111
Attendance: J. Frey, J. Jones, K. Longeteig, D. Pinsonneault, A. Senning and S. Solomon
Minutes of the January 8 meeting were approved as amended. K. Longeteig requested that the following be
th
included in the Feb. 12 minutes: "Two Lexingtonians were contacted by K. Longeteig regarding possibly
serving on the Tree Committee when a vacancy comes up. Both Stephen Ervin of 8 Wheeler Rd., landscape
architecture professor and Karen Blake of 45 Bartlett Rd., landscape designer and practitioner, readily expressed
their interest."
Applications for Tree Removal:
Outlook Dr.: removal of 5-6 dead trees approved by D. Pinsonneault. He is negotiating with N-Star for
replacement and will send N-Star a Tree Manual.
E-mail Addresses: It was voted to send E-mail addresses of all Tree Committee members to Paul Jahnige at
DEM.
Tree Manual:
30+ Complimentary Tree Manual copies have been distributed. A. Senning agreed to be custodian of an updated
copy for future printings. Each Committee member received a copy of the Complimentary Copy Letter.
Warrant Article: Article #34 was printed as requested.
Rindge Park Update:
Grant application mailed to Mass ReLeaf. D. Pinsonneault will send RFQ to nurseries when it is approved.
Watering logistics for newly planted trees were discussed. TreeGator and volunteer watering brigades were
suggested. Hoses are a problem for the latter. More discussion is required.
Other Business:
a) Invite the State to one of our meetings (time change necessary?) or possibly to a CLC or LF&GC meeting.
b) Tree City form mailed by D. Pinsonneault. There are new ground rules: urban vs. non-urban categories; new
formula for money distribution. Two proposals, with several options, are outstanding. D. Pinsonneault is
following this.
c) K. Longeteig shared some recent publications with the Committee. URI (Dr. Brian Maynard) has published an
excellent list of trees for New England. Cornell University and the Town of Albany? have a website and a video
on their work on urban bare root planting and TreeGator Drip watering.
Tree Manual Review:
Connie Rawson (MIS Director) previewed how the Tree Manual will appear on the Town web site. Committee
was very enthusiastic about this accomplishment.
Arbor Day:
The LF&GC celebration of Arbor Day is set for 11:00 Am on April 30 at the corner of Mass. Ave. and Meriam
St. Suggestions for the tree that is to be planted are Tulip Tree, Sweet Gum and Yellowood in order of preference.
Next Projects:
a) Tree Inventory
b) Memorial Tree Program and Booklet
Meeting adjourned at 8:45 AM.
Next meeting: Thursday, March 11, 2004 at 7:30 AM in Rm. 111, Town Office Bldg.
Respectfully submitted: Susan Snell Solomon
