2020 Vision Committee Meeting
Tuesday, December 4, 2007
Selectmen’s Meeting Room
Meeting Time: 7:30 A.M.
In attendance:
Fernando Quezada (Chair), Mollie Garberg, Marian Cohen, Ann
Redmon, George Burnell, Peter Enrich, Candy McLaughlin, & Matt Courchene
Meeting Began:
7:57 a.m.
The Committee reviewed and approved the minutes from the 11/6/07 meeting.
Demographic Scoping Group Update
Marian briefed the Committee about the work of the demographic change scoping
o
group and the latest progress the group has made. Data from the 2000 U.S.
Census is very old data for the purposes of their work, but there are a number of
useful websites that have future projections. The task force will decide which
data to use and how to determine trends. The task force can also reach out to
other committees for additional demographic information.
The scoping group has discussed issues raised by the demographic data. These
o
will be included in the report.
People recruited for the future Task Force should enjoy working with data, have
o
good analytical capabilities, and be able to assess statistical reliability.
Economic Development Task Force
Mollie spoke about the latest news and updates relating to the Economic
o
Development Task Force (EDTF). Larry Smith will bring forward a citizen
warrant at Town Meeting. As Mollie learns more about the issue she will update
the 2020 Committee.
The EDTF’s work is analytical, and does not have an implementation focus. It
o
was mentioned that commercial zoning issues and FAR are not part of the
Planning Board’s current work program.
Cecil Group will facilitate a Community Forum scheduled for the evening of
o
February 5th. The EDTF will take part in a panel discussion.
Public Information
The group approved the draft 2007 Town Report document with a few edits.
o
LexMedia - George suggested that 2020 work with LexMedia to produce a video
o
that would help the public learn more about the work of the Committee. It could
focus first on demographic data, and then discuss commercial economic
development within Lexington. The purpose of the video is to help the 2020
Committee build community awareness within Lexington.
Goals
Candy distributed the original 27 goals of the 2020 Committee. Fernando
o
proposed a goals assessment, not in terms of revising specific language, but rather
re-evaluating the priority of goals. Can we determine if some goals have been
accomplished? The process of reassessing goals will continue at the next
Committee meeting.
Committee members stressed the ability of 2020 to modify and adapt with much
o
greater ease than other town committees. 2020 must always be conscious of the
future, and continue to work on building a strong connection with the public.
