Lexington 2020 Vision Committee
April 6, 2006 Meeting Minutes

Fernando called the meeting to order at 7:50 am. Charles Hornig introduced himself as the new
liaison from the Planning Board. A new School Committee liaison has not yet been designated.
The minutes from the March 2 meeting were approved.
Economic Development scoping group.
There was discussion about the reasons businesses
may decide to locate in Lexington or not. It was felt that the process in Lexington can
discourage businesses, and there needs to be latitude around planning parameters. The Planning
Board has been very interested in focusing on the topic of economic development to address
these issues and to figure out what “the town” wants. Fernando commented that a cohesive
policy could help with seeking out the kinds of businesses that would be good for Lexington.
The committee plans to assemble a small scoping group that would meet half a dozen times later
this spring to focus the issues. Members would come from the business and real estate interests
represented at the March 7 meeting, as well as representatives of neighborhood and town
constituencies. Stacey will ask for a volunteer at the upcoming South Lexington Civic
Association meeting, and Fernando will check with Gloria Bloom about a TMMA representative.
Sustainable Lexington topic.
Candy read a list of questions that might provide a starting point
for discussion on this new topic. This is an example of a set of issues where many stakeholder
groups are doing various pieces, but there is no overarching policy with goals that set a direction
and unify the various efforts. Involvement by 2020 Vision could provide an opportunity to think
long run about a comprehensive approach. The next step is to invite representatives of all the
different groups to a meeting in May.
Draft Progress Report.
The group reviewed and discussed the draft that had been circulated
over email. Several edits were suggested, and the committee reaffirmed the importance of
having an insert or tear-off page for community input. The committee will present the report to
Town Meeting after school vacation, simultaneously mailing it town wide.
Recruitment strategy.
A newspaper article soliciting new members for the 2020 Vision
Committee had been discussed previously, but it now seems more appropriate to focus on the
progress report. Opportunities to participate in the 2020 Vision process will be identified both in
the report itself and in the article. Targeted follow-up with individuals will continue.
