Minutes - Lexington Town Tree Committee

Attendance: J. Frey, K. Longeteig, A. Senning and S. Solomon, N. Walker and J. Wood
1. Minutes of the July 10 meeting were approved as amended.
2. Tree Inspections (To date):
124 By-law telephone calls: 176 trees removed 380 trees replaced
59 calls completed
3. Tree Manual:
DEM will announce Grant approvals the 1st week of September.
4. Reappointments:
K. Longeteig and N. Walker have agreed to a three year reappointment. J. Frey will notify
the selectmen.
5. Depot Sq.:
Several dead/dying trees were reported.
Is contract still valid for maintenance and replacement? K. Longeteig will check plan.
Who is responsible for weeding? The Lexington Field & Garden Club will do the weeding.
What about irrigation?
6. Fletcher & Belfry Hill [Jan. '03 5K$ DEM Grant]:
21 trees planted at School Administration (Fletcher) site. $238/tree
Question - Why none at Belfry Hill? Monies all spent.
Question - documentation of spending.
Question - Why wasn't plan followed?
Proposal requested 10 trees for at Belfry Hill and 21 at Fletcher.
Copies of the bid and award needed (J. Wood).
Need accountability from DPW.
J. Wood will write letters, as official Tree Committee requests, to Selectmen, DPW, et. al.
for J. Frey's signature.
7. Other Available Trust Funds for tree planting use:
Kirk Fund (only for Lincoln St./Worthen Rd.).
Lee Fund (only for Fitness Path).
8. Rindge Ave Meeting:
J. Frey, P. Mazerall and A. Senning met with the abutters.
They plan to plant trees along Rindge Ave.
One large Oak tree and three Cherry trees now exist.
Recommended three more Oaks for shade and to protect exposed playground equipment.
Watering, as always, is an issue. Install a water hydrant?
Neighbors can bring water but too labor intensive and expensive.
9. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 AM.
Next meeting: Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003 at 7:30 AM in Rm. 111, Town Office Bldg.
