HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-06-12-TREE-min Minutes - Lexington Tree Committee June 12, 2003 @ 7:30 AM Town Office Building: Rm. 111 Attendance: J. Frey, D. Pinsonneault, A. Senning and S. Solomon, N. Walker, J. Wood and J. Kreiger (Selectman) 1. Minutes of the May 8 meeting were approved as submitted. 2. Tree Inspections: (D. Pinsonneault) 109 sites visited: Legislated trees affected - 48 Trees removed - 171 Trees to be replaced - 370 Layout was changed at several sites to save large trees. Town Building Inspector informs D. Pinsonneault when work is completed. 3. Referendum Impact: (D. Pinsonneault) No stump grinding, weed control spraying or funds for overtime. Preventative pruning will be delayed. Street light replacement will be absorbed into daytime program. Forestry Dept. crew: 4 (reorganization pending) Parks - Trees - Cemetery lost 2 employees Objective is to maintain existing quality level but do fewer tasks 4. Grant Applications: Mass Relief Fund can be used for education and planning. Matching funds are needed. Work-in-kind (@ $10/hr) is acceptable. 40 LHS students (for Community Service) removed invasive species at Lincoln Park for a 500 hr credit. [Excellent job] ( N. Walker) Program for Trees: Possible volunteer pilot inventory study - Urban & Community Forestry Grant Amount requested up to D. Pinsonneault. 5. Tree Manual: (J. Wood) Will apply for grant reimbursement. Calculate volunteer hours (since formation of the Tree Committee) spent on research (other town by-laws) , actual writing, hiring graphic artist for consistency of diagrams, edit & review process, proofreading, compiling Tables of Appropriate Trees, etc. Application due July 18 at DEM - Urban Forestry Discussion of the number of copies required, types of binding, etc. No decisions. 6. Future Agenda Items: a) Tree planting philosophy - long-term direction. b) Evaluate existing Trust Funds (see attachment from J. Wood). c) Protecting and controlling our assets (essentially inventory) d) Put copyright symbol on diagrams in Tree Manual and submit paperwork to Town Clerk e) Town-wide solicitation for gifts possible to Blossom/Edison Fund 7.
