LEXINGTON TREE COMMITTEE
Minutes, May 9, 2002 meeting
Room G-15, Town Office Building
Attendance: Frey, Griscom, Mazerall, Solomon, Walker, Wood, Selectman Jeanne Krieger
1. Minutes to be revised and e-mailed as soon as possible, to include minor corrections
2. Unanimous vote to move for recommendation of line item 2004 under Article #4 at next appropriate session of Town
Meeting
a) Cut request from $25,000 to $15,000
b) Request funding not be from free cash, to satisfy the Appropriations Committee; suggest that $18,000 be transferred
from the "trolley grant" etc.
c) Nell Walker has prepared slides/handout
d) Paul Mazerall suggests purchasing smaller (2") trees
cheaper
better survival
e) Stress mortality rate (102 cut, 2 planted)
3. Guest Ingrid Klimoff urged support for PAYT
monies earned could restore monies cut from the tree appropriation
suggestions: Minute Man column, "Trees Need Help"
institutionalize yearly expenditure
need more public relations efforts
coordinate with other groups
(CLC, League of Women voters, Lexington Field and
Garden Club suggested)
Jeanne Krieger said that there would be a 2004 operating budget
override to create a tax base; a groundswell would be needed
to support trees; tap resources for public enthusiasm and appreciate benefits
Nell Walker: unique and champion tree campaign or contest
4. Discussion regarding town meeting member suggestion re transplanting
trees from property owners' yards, and use of volunteers
Paul Mazerall suggested that the town tree nursery on Hartwell Avenue be reinstated
5. Concerns were expressed that David Pinsonneault has missed the last 3 meetings
a) consider establishing a separate Tree Division
b) DPW must be enlisted to aid our cause; contact Brian Gilbert and Bill Hadley (John Frey)
c) need record of trees planted, where and what species
d) the Tree Committee should be allowed to review planting contracts
6. Jo Griscom is taking the GPS course at the high school
7. The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 AM
8. The next meeting will be on June 13, 2002 at 7:30 AM in Room 111 of the Town Office Building
