Historic Districts Commission
Minutes of April 6, 2000
Commissioners in attendance: Ian Adamson, Mark DiNapoli, Dan Fenn, Joann Gschwendtner,
and Lynn Hopkins; Associate Commissioners: Daniel Griffin and Eleanor MacQueen.
PETITIONS HEARD:
1775 Mass. Avenue - Carlson Real Estate -
Ed Juralewicz, United Sign Co., Inc. was unable to
attend. Hearing continued to May.
1575 Mass. Avenue - Police Station
- Dave Carbonneau, representing the Town of Lexington,
stnd
received approval for a louver to be located between the 1 and 2 floor of the police station on
the School Administration Building side, and a new condensing unit in the same location as the
old. Certificate No. 2000C-22
1709 Mass. Avenue - Carolinas
- Dale Broach received approval for 8 tables, 28 chairs, and 8
umbrellas for the outside patio. Certificate No. 2000C-24
36 Waltham Street -
Bryn Robinson, Boston Sign Co., representing Hope Zuleta, received
approval for a black sign with painted gold lettering and green border to hang on top of window.

7 Harrington Road - First Parish Garden Committee
- Nancy Earsy received approval to
build a memorial garden behind the first parish Church. The garden will include an arbor,
benches, rock wall, a water feature, paving stones, and plantings. Certificate No. 2000C-25
36 Bedford Street - Stop and Shop -
Tom Fenn and Thomas Scott received approval to enclose
the loading dock. Commissioners asked that the compactor be painted to match surroundings.
Mr. DiNapoli stepped out for this hearing. Certificate No. 2000C-26
Mass. Avenue - between Pleasant Street and Gibson Road
- Dave Carbonneau, representing
the Town of Lexington, received approval to put up school zone signage (18 signs). Vote was 4-
1 with Mr. DiNapoli opposing. Certificate No. 2000C-27
Mr. Fenn joined the meeting.
Bedford Street at Harrington Road -
Dave Carbonneau, representing the Town of Lexington,
presented plans for additional changes to the Bedford Street/Harrington Road intersection. Also
discussed brick sidewalk in front of Buckman Tavern. Commission feels the Town should come
up with a complete plan of the area before we do pieces. Also should contact the Historical
Society. Mr. Carbonneau also discussed that the barrels, reflectors, and excess signage which
will be removed from the Minute Man statue area for the Patriot's Day celebrations.

2 Bloomfield Street -
John and Lynn Woodhouse received approval to install 5 basement
windows. Outside original windows will remain. Certificate No. 2000C-28
One Harrington Road
- Rick Bechtel, representing Joann Gschwendtner, received approval to
install one square roof vent and reroof entire house. Certificate No. 2000C-29

45-47 Waltham Street -
Rick Bechtel, representing Guardian Savings Bank, received approval
for a change in style of signage for Guardian Savings (which will include logo) and salon.
Commission requests Guardian Savings forego logo. Certificate No. 2000C-30
23 Bedford Street -
Brian Cunningham received approval for a roof vent and reshingling
portions of the roof. Certificate No. 2000C-31
1088 Mass. Avenue –
Donald and Victoria Sullivan received approval for a new garage and
driveway. Certificate No. 2000C-32
922 Mass. Avenue
- Edwin and Britta McCarthy received approval to add a new brick chimney
to already approved new addition. Certificate No. 2000C-33
INFORMAL HEARINGS
763 Mass. Avenue - Follen Church Parsonage
- David Whittridge discussed replacement of
windows and replacing siding. Commission suggested looking into repairing existing windows.
2006 Mass. Avenue
- Ed McCarthy discussed adding a two-foot or less stonewall on the
westerly side. Commission felt it would be appropriate; will return for formal hearing.
915-917 Massachusetts Avenue -
Bill and David Rothfuchs discussed plans for renovating 915
Mass. Avenue back to a single-family home and demolishing 917 Mass. Avenue and building a
new single family home. The two homes will be attached at the garage. The Rothfuchs will
return for formal hearing.
1557 Mass. Avenue - School Administration Office
- Gretchen Denison came before the
Commission asking for permission to place a 3x4 foot temporary sign in front of the School
Administration Building advertising a yard sale for Diamond School. The Commission
determined that there was no need for a Certificate of Appropriateness. The sign will be put up
after Patriot's Day and will be removed within 3 days after yard sale.
905 Mass. Avenue
- Jack Shay discussed plans for renovating; will return for formal hearing.
The minutes March 2, 2000 were approved.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 p.m.
