Marianne’s spreadsheet of Center Improvements is coming via email to all committee
members.
Jerry’s letter to the Traffic Safety Advisory Committee should also be transmitted by
email to all members.
Olga motioned for approval of the November Sidewalk Committee Meeting Minutes.
This was unanimously approved.
Francine has gotten emails about sidewalks since Jerry’s letter to the Minuteman. Four
letters concerning Hill St. Francine is asking Wayne where Hill St. is on the priority list
for sidewalks. Richard suggested stripping on the side to make the road look narrow and
slow down cars. The question was asked: Why doesn’t the town like speed bumps? The
answer was perceived maintenance issues, trouble with drainage and plowing.
Olga suggested an insert for the tax bill. Francine and Olga will work on this.
Olga is still working with Fiske Commons on access to Fiske school. Also Olga met with
Fiske’s Vice Principal and PTA to design a new pick up traffic pattern. They need to
consult the police before it is put into practice.
Meg reported that Hastings is still waiting for No Parking signs on Roosevelt St.
Olga motioned: Make installation of No Parking signs on Roosevelt St. a very high
priority. This was unanimously approved.
Lucy asked: As we look at these emergency issues/complaints, where does the overall
plan fit into this? The Bowman district has a couple of high priority areas that required
sidewalks.
Olga asked if key school personnel have been contacted about the issue.
Jerry will send out high priority items and second tier items to each school representative.
At the Walkable Community Workshop in September the intersection of Mass. Ave and
Woburn St. was discussed. Richard reported that the design work has been done to
improve the safety. The cross walk at the Post Office is another area that could use
redesign after a pedestrian death. Richard suggested that an island be added to the middle
of the road and bump out the sidewalk to narrow the road at the crosswalk.
The committee then entered a discussion of the continuing issue of how to prioritize
sidewalk building and maintenance with limited funds. Jeanne stated a master plan is
needed to justify the investment in sidewalks. Olga motioned that a letter be sent to the
selectmen and DPW requesting $225, 000 annually be allocated for maintenance and
improved connectivity of sidewalks in Lexington. Jerry will send the letter.
