Rindge Avenue Park Name Change The Board of Selectmen has received a written request from Mr. James Barry to rename Rindge Park and would like feedback from the Recreation Committee. Mr. Barry attended the meeting and presented the Recreation Committee with the proposal to change the name of Rindge Park in East Lexington to the Albert J. Moretti Park. (Proposal attached). Mr. Barry explained that Albert Moretti was the first slain World War II serviceman whose remains were brought back to Lexington. He was an East Lexington resident who lived next to Rindge Park. Mr. Barry noted that the VFW Post 3007 of Lexington and the East Lexington Community Association supported the proposal. Dick Thuma asked Mr. Barry how many Lexington Residents were killed during World War II, and also if there was presently any memorial in honor of these veterans. He also inquired if there were any parks or playgrounds in Lexington named or renamed for veterans. Wendy Rudner volunteered to research the World War II Lexington veterans and will attempt to get a list of those who were killed in World War II from the Veterans Affairs office. Members of the Recreation Committee suggested that while the proposal had a lot of merit, they were concerned that such a specific renaming of a park might “open the floodgates” of requests. Dick Thuma noted that it was a wonderful idea to honor those people who gave their lives for their country, and asked if it would be possible to name the park in honor of all the veterans killed in World War II, rather than just Mr. Moretti? Sandra Shaw and Rick DeAngelis suggested that it might be possible to rename the park in honor of the East Lexington veterans who served during the war The Recreation Committee told Mr. Barry that they would like time to consider his proposal They complimented him again on his efforts, and indicated that they would vote on the proposal at the August meeting. Mr. Barry will be contacted with the date of the next meeting. 6. Appointment of two members to the Lincoln Park Sub-Committee Sheila Butts distributed information packets about the proposed two new members of the Lincoln Park Sub-Committee. Dick Thuma stated that he was disinclined to appoint any new members to the sub-committee without more information about the charge and history of the Lincoln Park Sub-committee. Members of the Recreation Committee posed the following questions: How did they come into being? What is their history? What is their charge? Hw many members are they allowed to have? The Recreation Committee voted 5 – 0 to: A. Put a discussion of the creation, history and charge of the Lincoln Park Sub- Committee on the August 2007 Recreation Committee Agenda B Defer the appointments and any further discussion until they are able to have a Lincoln Park Sub-Committee discussion with Director of Recreation Karen Simmons. 2 Hank Manz suggested that the Recreation Committee consider having a Summit Meeting with the Lincoln Park Sub-Committee to discuss the past, present and future direction of the sub-committee. 7.
