RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING
July 12, 2006
Members Present: Sandra Shaw, Rick DeAngelis, Dick Thuma, Robert Boudreau
Staff Present: Karen Simmons, Sheila Butts, Dave Pinsonneault, Andy Dreyer
Others Present: Bill Harrison and John Allen of New England Golf
Hank Manz, Board of Selectmen
AGENDA:
1. Pine Meadows
Stephen Kay of “Golf Course Design” located in New Jersey was hired to evaluate the golf
course. A mini master plan dated 2/15/2006 was handed out to the Lexington Recreation
Committee at their June meeting. Bill Harrison, President of New England Golf Corporation was
on hand to review the plan and answer any questions. Bill Harrison also reviewed and talked
about what has been done at the golf course over the past 10 years.
Improvements include: new and expanded parking lot, new maintenance building, maintenance
of clubhouse, new cart paths, new curbing, tree planting, automation to half the irrigation system.
Player numbers have been stable over the past few years, but lower than 6 years ago. What can
be done to improve numbers? Main reason for low numbers is the weather and record-breaking
rainfall in June. Also, people do not have as much time to play a round of golf. Customer
Satisfaction Surveys are done on an annual basis. What have past customer surveys said?
ndth
??
2 and 8 greens- hard to putt
??
People have less time to play
Ways to increase revenue?
??
Solicit corporate leagues from surrounding businesses to fill lunch time slot
??
Partner with JP Carroll/Stone Meadow (and vice versa)
??
Offer free teaching round
??
Advertise group rate in newspaper
Karen will review some of these options with Bill Harrison to determine if they are feasible and
cost effective.

2. Lions Club Carnival
Members of the Recreation Committee expressed their concern regarding the extensive damage
done this year by the carnival and the length of time the fields were not playable. Rick suggested
the Lions Club hire a police detail to assist the carnival workers entering and leaving the facility
with the equipment. It becomes a free for all when they leave on the last night and cause undue
damage to the fields. Also, should the Town require a performance bond? That would be a
decision by the Board of Selectmen. Next year, the Recreation Committee would like the Board
of Selectmen to limit the field permit for the carnival to a maximum of one week. This includes
set up, the event itself and clean up. This summer, fields were out for almost two weeks. There
was extensive damage this year and fields were unplayable for too long after the carnival had left
town. Dave Pinsonneault is working with a private contractor to repair the damaged fields this
Fall. Over the past few years, DPW has sent invoices to the Lions Club for athletic field damage
and they have failed to pay them. The Lions Club will be asked to pay for the damage again this
year.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m.. Next meeting will be September 13, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. in
Town Hall room 111.
