The minutes of the May 18 Recreation Committee meeting were accepted by a vote
of 3 – 0.
3. Lincoln Park Update
Sandra Shaw welcomed Bill Erickson to the Recreation Committee meeting.
Selectman Peter Kelly approached Mr. Erickson in February asking if he was
interested in revising the architectural drawing he had submitted to the Recreation
Committee in 2004 for the Lincoln Park Restroom Facility. Mr. Kelley and other
local contractors expressed interest in putting together a private initiative to fund and
construct the restrooms.
Bill Erickson explained to the Recreation Committee that his revised drawings
include reducing the number of stalls and fixtures in both the Men’s and Women’s
Rooms, reducing the storage area in the building, dropping the roof line as requested
by the Lincoln Park Sub-Committee, and increasing the overhang on the roof.
The revised plans were submitted to the Building Department for review. The
Building Department did respond with a letter itemizing the architectural and
construction concerns they had.
Members of the Recreation Committee inquired about the building materials,
windows, ventilation, and security, and discussed options with Mr. Erickson.
The members noted that the Recreation Committee must approve the design,
functionality, and aesthetics of the proposed construction. Rick DeAngelis indicated

that the Committee needed to take a preliminary vote that evening. He believes that
Mr. Erickson presented a “workable plan”, but suggested that he and other committee
members would like to review colors, materials and recommended ongoing
maintenance plans before taking a final vote.
“The Recreation Committee
Dick Thuma introduced the following motion:
approves the revised plan for the Lincoln Park Restrooms on a conceptual level
and asks that the private citizens’ group bring color and materials samples to
the Committee for review prior to a final vote.”

motion.
4. Lexington United Soccer Club – donation
Semoon Oh, treasurer of Lexington United Soccer Club, requested permission from
the Recreation Committee to donate 6 Players’ Benches for the Lincoln Park Fields.
(Proposal and specifications attached) LUSC wants to make this donation in memory
of Steve Harrison, longtime youth coach, who passed away in 2004. After a brief
discussion about the benches and the plaques that will be attached, Dick Thuma made
the following motion:
“The Recreation Committee approves the donation by Lexington United Soccer
Club of 6 players’ benches for Lincoln Park subject to final language approval
for the plaque.” The Recreation Committee
Rick DeAngelis seconded the motion.
approved the motion 3 – 0.
5. Field Subcommittee Report
Karen Simmons provided the Recreation Committee with a brief overview of her
thoughts about a Field Subcommittee. She explained that the Recreation Department
had contacted numerous cities and towns in the area inquiring if they had such
committees. To date very few communities had responded. Those who have
responded do not have Field Subcommittees, although they all believe they are
important.
Although the Recreation Department believes this is an important venture, Karen
Simmons suggested that the Recreation Committee postpone further discussion until
the fall, when more data is available and there is more time for discussion and
initiation. Dick Thuma indicated that he thinks the idea of a Field Subcommittee is
very good. He volunteered to work on a rough outline of possible committee
membership and goals.
6. Recreation Report
Karen Simmons distributed copies of the USGA Turf Advisory Report to members of
the Recreation Committee. She noted that the USGA evaluates the turf at Pine
Meadows twice a year. Dick Thuma asked if it were possible to do a similar
evaluation of the playing fields each year. Dave Pinsonneault explained that the
USGA would not do that, but noted that there were companies that might be available
to take on such a project.
Copies of the 2005 Lincoln Park Projects Proposal by the Lincoln Park Subcommittee
were handed out to the Recreation Committee (attached). Karen Simmons expressed
2
her concerns about the proposed burning at the site. She explained that the
Recreation Department, Conservation, and the Lexington Fire Department had
already told the LPSC that this was not feasible.
Karen Simmons reported that the Aquatics facilities had opened successfully the first
weekend in June. She reminded the Committee members that the Old Reservoir
Swimming facility was now open to residents and non-residents alike, regardless of
whether they had a swim tag. Non residents can pay a daily admission.
7. Parks Report
Dave Pinsonneault reported that requests for quotes had been sent out for the Rindge
fencing and swing set replacement project. The Harrington softball field should be
completed by the end of June. He is currently investigating the cost to irrigate the
entire playing field at Harrington. At this point he has no information on the fencing
at Harrington, and will report back to the Recreation Committee once this information
is available.
8. New Business
The next meeting of the Recreation Committee will be held on July 20th, 6:00 P.M.,
at the Pine Meadows Golf Course. Dinner will be served, followed by a tour of the
course.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 P.M.
