Citizens and other boards No citizens or other boards were present. 2. Meeting minutes from September 22, 1999 The minutes were not discussed. 3. Skateboard Park th A topographic survey of the skate park site was scheduled for October 20, but because of the weather conditions might not have happened. Once this is done a landscape architect will draw up the blueprints and specifications for the project. Olga Guttag will get a building permit from the Town. Ground breaking is scheduled for the second week in November. 4. Little League fees The representative from Little League was unable to attend the meeting this week to discuss the fee increase. The Recreation Committee agreed to allow Little League to reschedule their meeting with the committee one more time before they make a final decision on the fee increase. Little League is now scheduled to meet with the Recreation Committee on Tuesday, November 16, 1999. 5. Capital project update The work at Rindge playground is almost complete. Recreation had to pay the Parks Department staff overtime to complete the project on the weekends. Next time the Recreation Department purchases playground equipment, Karen Simmons would like to like to have the company also install the equipment. 1625 MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE • LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02420 2 The specifications for the irrigation system at Pine Meadows have been written and need to be approved by Engineering. Once approved, the project will go out to bid. Karen noted that the revenue at Pine Meadows has increased by approximately 6% over the past year. Karen presented the Recreation Committee with a draft of the letter to be sent to Superintendent of Schools, Patricia Ruane, in reference to the Recreation Committee's prioritized list for the Recreation Facility Capital Projects scheduled at the High School, Clarke Middle School and Diamond Middle School. The Committee made some changes to the letter to be signed by Sandra Shaw and asked that they all receive a final copy of it. They would also like to have the original proposal that was presented to Town Meeting enclosed with to this letter. Dick Neumeier will call John Moynihan to find out if the borings at Clarke have been done. 6. Pine Meadows update rd Karen reported that trees are being planted on the right side of the3 fairway at Pine Meadows th and pine trees are being planted on the side of the 5 tee box. Rick DeAngelis and Don Chisholm think the Town and New England Golf have done a great job with the improvements on the cart paths so far. Currently Brian is waiting for the third price quote for the cart paths in order to complete the project this fall. 7. Karen's report Karen reported that Christine Maestri did a great job organizing the beautification project at Sutherland Park and she should be commended for her efforts. The Recreation Department continues to be challenged with finding space for programs. Recently Bowman School decided not to continue to provide space for the Sports for All program at their school. Bridge School would like the Recreation Department to find a new location for their summer camps. The principal and custodians feel that other schools should share the load of hosting the summer camps. Karen will speak with the Superintendent of Schools about this matter. In November Karen will meet with SPED to evaluate the 1999 summer camp season and to begin planning the 2000 season. Pam believes that Bridge School is a very valuable place to hold camp because of its location adjacent to the Old Reservoir. Several others on the committee agreed with her. Karen noted that the Council on Aging Board has voiced the opinion that they are not interested in building an intergenerational recreation center. The committee was surprised to hear that the COA thought this way. Karen also explained to the committee that Continuing Education is expanding and continuing to run more and more recreation programs. She will speak with the Superintendent of Schools because she feels that the Recreation Department and Community Education are two municipal entities which are competing against each other. Karen told the committee that other communities are moving towards combining the two departments. We are both here to serve the good of the community. 3 Karen presented the Recreation Committee with some of the capital improvements for the Aquatics Program for FY2000. These include building shade pavilions at the pool, purchasing pool covers, building an accessible ramp at the Old Res, and replacing the lockers in both the men's and women's locker rooms at the pool. Karen is preparing to present the Recreation Department Capital Projects to the Capital Expenditures Committee and the Board of Selectman. She will use the information that the committee agreed on last year. The meeting was adjourned at 9:08 p.m. NEXT MEETING TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1999 8:00 P.M. ROOM G-15
