Given the incidences of students showing up to last year's prom intoxicated and bringing
in and using substances there, the school realized something needed to change Mike
Jones said these conversations started in the Fall with school staff and administrators
This coupled with the recent death of a Lexington high school student due to drunk
driving really pushed the envelope After many conversations, the Lexington school
administration has decided to make busing to the prom mandatory Currently, the school
is supported by SADD (Students Against Destructive Decision-Making), the PTA's
Executive Board, and School Council.
The Youth Services Council voted to support mandatory busing to junior and senior
proms Council members are willing to be active participants in planning,
implementation, and overall collaboration. The Council was very clear in wanting to
stand alongside Lexington school administration. The school recognized that logistical
aspects were not mapped out just yet, but with school staff and student help, Mike Jones
knew they could pull it off. Becky Kosterman will formalize vote by drafting a letter to
Mike Jones stating support with list of Youth Services Council members
The group also spoke about this initiative being immediate, people's reactions, our
unified message, and the need for a larger safety net for youth.
