HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-08-09-LBAC-min,S US Mop pQ` 1 775 ` �(3 APRIL II � k /NG'V APPROVED MEETING MINUTES Committee Name: Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee Date, Time and Location of Meeting: August 9, 2012, 7 pm, Town Office Building Members Present: Peggy Enders, (Chair), Stew Kennedy, John Frey, Marita Hartshorn, George Gagliardi, Mike Tabaczynski Members Absent: Laurel Carpenter, Jerry Van Hook, Bob Hausslein (FoLB Others Present: Bob Dangel, Joel Adler, Rich Spencer Minutes: The July 2012 minutes were accepted. Mass Ave Bike Parking: The Selectmen approved the proposal to extend the bike parking pilot to include weekdays until Labor Day and on weekends until October. Mass Ave Striping: Peggy distributed a diagram of Mass. Ave. from Worthen Road to Rt. 128 showing road widths. The Traffic Safety Advisory Committee recommends a combination of sharrows and a narrow fog line where space allows — instead of bike lanes. We voted to recommend a three -foot fog lane and sharrows and the installation of BMTFL signs to reinforce the share - the -road message. The committee discussed the spreadsheet prepared by the LBAC roadways subcommittee. This group worked with John Livsey to identify the network of streets most used by cyclists, along with recommendations for striping, bike lanes, and other bike accommodations. The committee expressed the hope that the document will be used during future planning of street improvements. A member asked about plans for Lincoln Street striping. DCR Minuteman Bikeway Grant: A new map is being produced by Russ Brami of SnowyOwl Maps. The wayfinding portion of the project will begin once the DPW sets up a meeting with the company — Toole Design -- who has been awarded the contract. The company will use volunteer help to assess the current inventory of signs and amenities. Bikeway Safety: A roller blader was injured by an oncoming car at the Hancock Street intersection. The committee discussed the problems at Hancock and agreed that improvement of this intersection should be given high priority. The committee discussed again the importance of the Town underwriting a bicycle safety program. Peggy will set up a meeting with George Burnell and Peter Kelley to express the committee's position. Other Business: The committee approved the proposed three and a half inch square signs on the Bikeway as requested for the ACROSS Lexington loop. Mike expressed appreciation for the clearing the town has done in East Lexington to keep the view open to the Great Meadow. He will write a letter to the town to encourage them to keep up the good work. The meeting adjourned at 8:15 Record of the Discussions of the Friends of Lexington Bikeways We voted to endorse the Recreational Trails Program petition, asking for support through MAP -21. Bike corrals will continue being staffed through October. For the 300 celebration, we discussed the idea of staffing a bike corral on September 22. Sandra and Peggy will explore locations around the track and pool area. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm.
