Lexington Board of Health Meeting, December 12, 2007
Town Office Building, Room G-15
1625 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA 02420
Attendees: Burt Perlmutter, Chair; Judith Feldman; Sharon MacKenzie;
Deborah Thompson; Wendy Heiger-Bernays
Health Department Attendees: Kathy Fox, Ann Belliveau
Perlmutter called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. There was no public participation.
The Board reviewed the minutes of November 14, 2007. Feldman motioned to accept the
minutes as written. MacKenzie seconded. All approved.
The Board reviewed the data reports and the Public Health Nurse report.
MacKenzie informed the Board that at the last flu clinic, an Asian couple whom could
not speak English wanted a flu shot. The volunteers were unable to communicate with
them in order for them to complete the required paperwork for allergies, etc. It took a
long time to find someone on the telephone to do the translation. The Board would like
to have information sheets available for the public in many different languages as well as
volunteer translators from various churches such as the Chinese Bible Church. The first
step is to assess the population and determine what languages are spoken. We will revisit
this issue in 2008.
Fox updated the Board that the town will be re-advertising for the Public Health Nurse
position. Mackenzie stated that qualified applicants must be interviewed and offered the
position quickly otherwise they will receive other offers.
Fox gave the Board a copy of a message from the Town Manager’s Office from Dr.
Barbara Masi of 58 Bridge Street. Dr. Masi had come before the Board of Health on
March 7, 2007. Dr. Masi stated she wants to sue the Town because of the wood stove
smoke generated at 54 Bridge Street is a health hazard. She also stated the Town
misinterpreted the health code. Fox will let Linda Vine know about the message from
Dr. Masi. Fox will also check with the resident at 54 Bridge St. to see if the resident got
a new EPA approved wood stove for his house addition. Heiger-Bernays will contact the
Town Manager to get permission to contact the Town’s attorney in order to determine
whether the case was handled properly.
Fox informed the Board about not receiving the Shire permit application for their review.
Fox updated the Board concerning the water/well situation at 25 Marrett St. Mr. Gaut
told Fox he did not run out of water as expected. Mr. Gaut will be sending an
information letter to Fox concerning his plans.
MacKenzie motioned to adjourn. Thompson seconded. All approved.
