APPROVED MEETING MINUTES
Committee Name: Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee
Date, Time and Location of Meeting: July 12, 2012, 7 pm, Town Office Building
Members Present: Peggy Enders, (Chair), Stew Kennedy, John Frey, Marita
Hartshorn, Bob Hausslein (FoLB Chair), George Gagliardi, Richard Canale,
(Planning Board Liaison)
Members Absent: Laurel Carpenter, Jerry Van Hook, Mike Tabaczynski
Minutes: The June 2012 minutes were accepted as corrected.
Bike Parking on Mass Ave: David Kucharsky from the Town Planning
Department has requested help for another cyclist /pedestrian count at the
weekend bike corral; he has suggested it be done on July 28. George distributed
a draft of a card to hand out soliciting support for the continuation of the bike
corral. George will order the cards and also do a one -page flyer to be posted on
the corral and at various businesses.
Mass Ave Striping Options: Peggy met earlier in the day with John Livsey to
talk about various options for striping Mass Ave between Worthen Road and
Route 128. The committee was unanimous in its preference for the option that
provided for bike lanes (where width allows). This option would require that
parking be banned along this section of the avenue, but the committee felt that
very little parking happens on this section of the avenue, except around Hastings
Park during events. Given the importance of the new Battle Road Scenic Byway,
and the use of this roadway by commuters, the committee agreed that bike lanes
would be the safest and most attractive accommodation. John Livsey also told
Peggy that sharrows will be painted on Adams Street from East Street to the
Burlington line. Hayden and Spring Street crossing has bike detection, as does
the Marrett - Waltham intersection.
Complete Streets Workshops: Still no word on whether a 3 -hour workshop will
be scheduled, but John Livsey is optimistic, Peggy reported. Bedford Bike
Committee chair Terry Gleason asked for LBAC support to changes to the current
workshop content; since most committee members have not attended a session,
the committee was reluctant to sign on to the letter to Catherine Cagle.
DCR Proposal: Bob and Peggy have been working with Russ Brami from Snowy
Owl Maps to take the current draft Bikeway map to the next level. The plan is for a

13x19 map, with points of interest and inserts for each town. It was suggested
that VistaPrint be approached to donate printing costs.
The Minuteman Bikeway is so extremely crowded, especially on weekends that we
are concerned about the safety of all users. Two suggestions surfaced: larger
signs and using the electronic sign board. We need to devote a large block of time
to this issue at a future meeting.
Other business: Root barrier work will be done on the Bikeway in late summer.
The Historical Society got approval from the HDC for the two bike racks, one at
the Hancock Clarke House and the other at the Munroe Tavern. The racks were a
gift to the Historical Society from the Friends of Lexington Bikeways. A Boy Scout
will install them this summer.
Richard Canale reported on the hearing for the Route 2A bridge replacement.
The current cloverleaf design does not meet current standards. Many spoke in
favor of a new design including two roundabouts, which would accommodate
pedestrians and cyclists.
Peggy distributed the Bay State Greenway priority list. The Reformatory Branch
Trail is #5 on the list.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 pm.
Record of the Discussion of the Friends of Lexington Bikeways:
The treasurer's report was given. George will review the records as required for
non - profits.
The MassBike Ride is July 28, starting from Lexington High School. Laurel is in
touch with them about the Family Ride.
Farmers' Market Bike Corrals: The next corral is on August 7; volunteers will
record which patrons are first time users of bike parking.
Lexington's 300 Anniversary: Organizers of the 300 inquired as to whether
we plan to participate on Sept. 22 At this point we need more information.
Meeting adjourned at 8:55.
The next LBAC /FoLB meeting is on Thursday, August 9, 7 PM, Room 111, TOB.
