Tree Committee Minutes
June 14, 2012
The Tree Committee Monthly meeting was held on June 14, 2012 at 7:30 AM at the Samuel
Hadley Public Service Building, Room 125.
Present were Jim Wood, Jewel Kuljian, Anne Senning, John Frey, Karen Longeteig, Chris
Filadoro, Gerry Paul, Nell Walker. Absent FOT, Jane Beswick.
Jim Wood was appointed scribe.
2. Bylaw tree data will be sent to John Frey by Chris F. at a later date.
3. NSTAR is communicating better with Chris F. and is seeking to obtain pruning
clearances of 10 feet in height, 8 feet to the left and right, and 8 feet below power wires.
Their performance is better than in previous pruning events. Permits have been granted for
two months for pruning only and tree removal requires additional permission.
4. As part of Lexington's 300 Birthday Celebration, the Tree Committee sponsored a red
oak, 4.5 inch diameter, that was planted on the Lexington Battle Green on June 1, 2012.
5. Tool Shed and Compost Bins not approved by the Conservation Commission. Perhaps the
existing water shed could be expanded. Jim Wood to follow up with Conservation to see
what might be done.
6. Tree Inventory/Nursery/Planting Considerations:
A Lacebark Elm was removed found to be rootbound and placed back in the ground.
One setback tree, a Tulip Tree, has died. (Bedford Street)
A motion was made not to plant a substantial number of Trees in the Nursery next year
and was passed unaminously.
Gerry Paul suggested planting 10 bareroot street trees next year as an experiment.
Jim Wood provided the status of trees planted in the Nursery this Spring(2012).
Spring setback trees -19 of 20 have been planted with one remaining to be planted.
Gerry P. will meet with Anne S. to discuss the development and printing of Maps to
perhaps devise a way to make the process less labor intensive.
Nursery Spring Outplanting update -34 trees are left to be planted this Spring. Anne S.
noted that each tree takes 5 pages /1 map /1 dig safe coordination sheet.
To do: Jim W. & John F. will straighten /put down landscape cloth for Sourwoods.
Meet on the 26 June @ 9AM for Nursery maintenance.
Interns are eligible to use town equipment as they are covered by town insurance.
Tree Inventory- Interns -Chris F. noted they were having trouble getting responses The
current plan is to split the Interns time half to GIS Inventory and half to Nursery
Maintenance. Dave P. is handling for the town and for the Tree Committee Anne S. will
send requests to the Schools.Last one third of Town remains to be done.
7. Tree Management Manual -One complete review has been completed. Illustrations are
complete. The next step is to integrate the illustrations with the text.
8. Dave Pinsonneault is working on getting interns approved for the summer. done.
9. Status of Large Mitigation Maples in Nursery- 3 have been planted at the High School
along with one setback tree.done.
10. Tree Removal Mitigations- Vaille Ave -$1200 bill sent by Chris F. plus 15 trees requiring
mitigation. Chris F. noted that he is getting calls re setback and street trees that are dying or
have died.done.
11. Status of Trees at teardown, lot next to 3 Whittier -No permit has been requested yet.
Friends of Trees:done.
1. Medals -The 300 Birthday committee have a graphic artist and want to have a common
design theme.Karen L. will work with them.done.
2. The Nickles are OK with the $1500.00 for the commemorative tree.
There was no remote participation. The meeting was not recorded.
