Minutes Town Celebrations Committee August 17, 2011 Ellen Stone Room, Cary Hall Members present Dick Crogan, Linda Dixon, Mary Gillespie, Jo-Anne Granger, Paul Jenkins, Julie Miller, Wayne Miller, Bill Mix, Henry Murphy, Sandy Podgorski, Charlie Price and Bob Tracey Members not present Suzie Barry, Sondra Lucente, Jim Shaw and Dave Taylor Business Linda Dixon called the meeting to order at 7 pm. Veterans’ Day 2011  Committee members discussed the submission of contest essays by e-mail but, after learning that (1) many teachers assign these essays as part of regular class work and need to collect them in order to grade them, and (2) teachers regularly review them for obvious signs of plagiarism before submitting them to the committee, it makes sense to continue our practice of having the students hand the essays directly to their teachers for Mary Gillespie to pick up later.  Since the committee has its own e-mail address, Linda Dixon suggested that Lexington students not attending public schools, who want to participate in the contest, submit their entries by e-mail. We do not verify these entries for plagiarism now, so using e- mail instead of US mail should not matter. This will increase the speed and convenience for the entrant. Someone, possibly Suzie, will have to remember to take any submissions from the mailbox on deadline day and forward them to the subcommittee.  Linda will send committee members two documents: (1) the announcement flyer that Mary will hand out at her meeting with the social studies teachers. This same announcement will be sent to the media. (2) The time line showing steps in the process beginning next week when Mary plans to visit the superintendent of schools.
