MINUTES – LEXINGTON CONSERVATION COMMMISSION February 22, 2011 Commissioners present: Joyce Miller, Stew Kennedy, Dick Wolk, Phil Hamilton, Duke Bitsko, Charlie Wyman (7:35), David Langseth (7:35) Others present: Emily Schadler, Conservation Assistant; Louise Vinci, Conservation Clerk Chair Joyce Miller opened the meeting at 7:30 pm in Cary Auditorium, Cary Memorial Building. 7:30 pm Hearing: Idylwilde Community Garden Improvements Documentation: Draft Recommendations for Improvements for Lexington Idylwilde Community Gardens, dated February 17, 2011 Update to: Draft Recommendations for Improvements for Lexington Idylwilde Community Gardens, dated February 22, 2011 Emily Schadler outlined garden improvement recommendations which included:  Relocating garden  Old garden phase out  Old garden restoration and site clean  Water  Fencing  Garden fees  Garden guidelines  Other amenities Comments from the Commission: David Langseth questioned if the Commission was being asked to approve funding. Ms. Schadler responded that the request was for approval of land use only and that funds were available in the 2011 budget. Charlie Wyman was concerned at the amount of time this project would demand from the conservation staff. Comments from the audience: Audience members’ comments were in favor of the project, and felt there was a need for water to be provided, and plots to be less shaded. Members of the audience questioned how often the field would be cut and if there would be room to ski around the new garden area in the winter. Ms. Schadler responded that the fields would be mowed once a year, the perimeter strip around the garden would be plowed two to three times a year and there should be room around the garden for skiing.
