Lexington Human Rights Committee <br />Meeting Minutes <br />April 17, 2009 <br />Present: Richard Capron, Joseph O'Leary, Hank Manz, Bob Kent, Linda Vine, Deborah <br />Jackson, Fuang -Ping Huang, and Albert Zabin. <br />Guests: Melissa Buttaro, Guidance Counsel, LHS. <br />Meeting at the Selectman's Meeting Room was called to order at 8:OOAM <br />Joe reported two people protested the Day of Silence at LHS on April 15 They held <br />signs peacefully protesting the event and were ignored by the public. <br />On Sunday, April 19 there will be another group holding a rally on the Battle Green. <br />The group feels that the government has denied citizens their rights through over <br />regulation and unlawful taxation. They also have ties to other groups that have issues <br />with US immigration policies. A small group of counter protesters indicated they will be <br />on the green, too. The Police Dept anticipates no problems and the only impact is that <br />visitors may believe these people are some how tie to the Town of Lexington. <br />The case against the defendant on the Muzzy Street assault was dismissed without <br />prejudges due to violation of Rule 36. The rule is to grant the defense a speedy trial. <br />However, the defense attorney was able to use it to have the case dismissed. The <br />committee is concerned about the victim and will check with Victim /Witness Advocate to <br />see what has been provided to support the victim. <br />The committee feels that the young generations lack of appreciation on minority <br />struggles, and will look into program development for school and library to raise <br />awareness among young people. <br />Board of Selectmen has suggested the committee to form a Citizen Advisory Board for <br />specific functions within HRC. <br />Melissa Buttaro expressed her desire to become an HRC member. Hank will present the <br />notion at the selectmen's meeting. <br />The next committee meeting is scheduled on May 15, 2009 at 8:00 AM. <br />The meeting adjourned at 9:00 am. <br />
