2010 Minuteman Cane Award Committee Meeting
Monday, April 5, 2010
2 PM in Town Hall, Room 111

Committee members present were Dot Boggia, Chairman, Marie Hill, Lodia Parilla,
David Williams, Sheldon Spector, Dick Michelson, Barbara Ciampa, Jackie Ward, Leo
McSweeney and Beverly Kelley. The only absent member was Charlie Price.

This was the only meeting this year. We did not meet in February as usual.

The meeting was called to order at 2:03. The minutes of the April 7, 2009 meeting were
accepted. This committee is 23 years old this year! And four of our members have been
on it since the beginning. They are Dot Boggia, Lodia Parilla, Sheldon Spector and
David Williams. Thank you to all of you!

Jackie ward is on the committee this year because she was last year’s winner and she will
remain on the committee for a total of 2 years. Leo McSweeney was welcomed as a new
permanent member.

The first order of business was the reception. It will be held this year on Sunday, April
25 from 2-4 PM at the Historical Society Depot. The reception will honor the recipients
of the Cane Award, the White Tricorn Hat Award and the Outstanding Youth Award. It
is held in conjunction with the Lions Club and members of this committee are asked to
contribute a finger dessert for the occasion.

We next discussed how to solicit more nominations. This year we only had four, and
three of them were from last year. Suggestions included putting it on the Town’s
website, submitting a letter to the editor of the Minuteman in January and also submitting
an announcement in the Colonial Times in January. It was also suggested that each
committee member try to think of people who would be deserving and perhaps solicit
family members to nominate that person.

At 2:20 we began discussing the current four nominees. They were Bob Edwards, Dan
Fenn, Jr., MaryLou Touart and Samuel Altschuler. There was a discussion regarding
favoring someone who has not already received recognition and it was decided that each
committee member should use his or her judgment on that issue. We gave fair and equal
treatment to each candidate and then we took a secret written vote. (Charlie Price voted
by absentee ballot.) Sheldon and David left the room and tallied up the votes. This
year’s recipient is Bob Edwards. The first runner-up was Dan Fenn and the second
runner-up was Mary Lou Touart. Therefore, Dan and Mary Lou will automatically be
considered next year. Dot and Marie will tell Bob, and Marie will write up the citation
th
which Dot will read at the ceremony on the Green on April 19.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:45.
Respectfully submitted by Beverly Kelley, Secretary
April 5, 2010
