Minutes
Town of Lexington Appropriation Committee
March 17, 2008

Place and time: Town Office Building, Selectmen’s Meeting Room, 8:00 AM

Members present: Alan Levine (Chair), Deborah Brown, Susan McLeish, Eric
Michelson, Pam Hoffman

Also present: Rod Cole, Dawn McKenna, Tom Diaz, Dr. Paul Ash, and Mary Ellen Dunn

The meeting was called to order at 8:15 AM.

Metco Funding.
1.The topic of the meeting was Metco funding and the use of
Metco funds and their reflection in the school budget. A lengthy discussion
regarding timing of identification of Metco funding in the school budget as a
revenue source ensued. This conversation arose as a result of the presentation
that $60,000 of funds for all day kindergarten would come from Metco
funding and it was unclear earlier that such funds were available. The
Committee expressed a preference to identify the funding initially - when the
budget is being built. School Department representatives said they intended,
in next year’s school budgeting process, to consider and reflect both grants
and revolving funds during the initial stages of budgeting. This will ensure
that the funding is explicit and that it is visible to the community.
The Committee said it would prefer to reflect the funding in the budget for
2009 and to explain to the community why $60,000 of Metco funds are
available for the all day kindergarten program. The School Committee will
further discuss the situation at their meeting tomorrow evening and those
present felt it would be helpful if the Appropriation Committee liaisons
attended that meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:25 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan McLeish

Approved October 22, 2008

- 1 -
