r <br /> <br /> Y <br /> HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION <br /> A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday, Octo- <br /> ber 8, 1975 in Room G15, Town Office Building. Lexington, at 8x00 P.M. Present <br /> were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia H. Williams, Secretary= <br /> Donald J. Shaw; S, Lawrence Whipple; and Associate Commissioner Ruth B. Adams. <br /> Mrs. Adams was appointed to serve for Commissioner Thomas J. Holzbog who was un- <br /> able to be present. <br /> A discussion was held on the application of F. William Smith for changes in <br /> the exterior architectural features of the premises at 1037-1039 Massachusetts <br /> Avenue, which is within the East Village District. The question was raised as <br /> to whether or not a building permit had been issued for the replacement of the <br /> windows and the replacement of the roof and, if so, why was a permit issued with- <br /> out a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Districts Commission hav- <br /> ing been issued. It was stated that a building permit may not have been neces- <br /> sary for the interior work and that one may not have been issued for the exterior <br /> changes made so far. Mr, Shaw said that he feels that the roof over the doorway <br /> which Mr, Smith wishes to remove is too heavy for the small windows that have <br /> been installed, and he stated that he felt removal of the ells was acceptable, <br /> A discussion was held on the application of F, William Smith for maintenance <br /> of the fences and electrical boxes for the Russell Square Condominiums at 1505 <br /> Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Munroe Tavern District. Mr, Shaw said <br /> that he did not ob,jeet to the fences but felt that the electrical box which is <br /> most visible should be screened. It was moved, seconded, and unanimously VOTED <br /> to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness to F. William Smith with respect to <br /> the maintenance of fences and electrical boxes for the Russell Square Condomin- <br /> iums at 1505 Massaohusetts Avenue, which is within the Munroe Tavern District. <br /> Participating in this decision were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Georgia H. <br /> Williams, Donald J. Shaw, S. Lawrence Whipple, and Associate Commissioner Ruth <br /> B. Adams, <br /> A discussion was held on the application of the Lexington Minute Men, Inc, <br /> with respect to the parking sign on the premises at 1314 Massachusetts Avenue, <br /> which is within the Munroe Tavern District. Mr, Shaw said that he felt the sign <br /> was too high and in the wrong location, He said that he felt a sign 3 1/2 to 4' <br /> from ground level would be more appropriate, <br /> Then followed a discussion on the application of Joseph Castilla d/b/a The <br /> Village Cobbler with respect to the erection and display of a sign on the store <br /> at 16 Waltham Street, which is within the Battle Green District, Mr, Whipple <br /> said that he felt the lettsrs are weak, It was stated that additional informa- <br /> tion is needed from Mr, Castilla before action can be taken on this application. <br /> A discussion was held on the installation of blacktopping at Norton, IQeven <br /> & Co. premises at 3 Fletcher Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. <br /> T~.r, Jaquith stated that he had looked at the premises and that there is landscap- <br /> ing in front of the building, Mr, Jaquith, Mrs. Williams, and Mr, Shaw all said <br /> that they felt the blacktopping installed was acceptable so it was decided that <br /> no action would be taken on this matter, <br /> <br />
