~ s <br /> HISTORIC DISTRICTS COMMISSION <br /> A meeting of the Historic Districts Commission was held on Wednesday, <br /> May 21, i975, in the Selectmen's Meeting Room, Town Offise Building, Lexing- <br /> ton. Present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman; Georgia H, <br /> Williams, Secretary; Thomas J. Holzbog; Donald J. Shaw` S, Lawrence Whipplef <br /> and Associate Commissioner Oliver F. Hooper. <br /> A hearing was held at bass P.M, on the application of Consumer Value <br /> Stores for a Certificate of Appropriateness with respect to exterior archi- <br /> tectural changes for the building at 1719-1724 Massachusetts Avenue, which <br /> is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Jaquith read the legal notice and <br /> application for a Certificate. Mr. David Tealis, Construction Supervisor <br /> far Consumer Value Stores, submitted scale drawings of the proposed rear <br /> wall of the building which is to be of circler block with a brick veneer. <br /> There is to be a steel fire door with a single light above the door acrd the <br /> door is to be painted red to match the brick wall. The sign backboan~. is <br /> to be 3' x 19' of matte finish with a wood fascia boar<3 sapping and the ends <br /> curved over. The letters "CVS" are to be 2' in height ar~d the letters far <br /> the word "pharmacy" are to be 16" in height. The hearing was adjourned at <br /> 8:3o P.M. <br /> Robert Callahan of Lexington Carvers & Signmakers submitted a palette <br /> mock-up of the sign for the Massachusetts Avenue elevation of The Minute <br /> Shop at 9 Muzzey Street. Mr. Holzbog said that he felt the brushes w®re too <br /> thin. Mrs. Williams said that she felt the width of the brushes was a little <br /> narrow. The sign is to have a burnt backboard with the letters of "Minute <br /> Shop" in gold leaf and the six color spots (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, <br /> and white) painted on the backboard. <br /> A hearing was held at 8c4~ P.M, on the application of C. H. Fabrics for <br /> a Certificate with respect to the erection and display of a sign for the <br /> store at 36 Waltham Street, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr, <br /> Jaquith read the legal notice and application. Robert Callahan submitted <br /> drawings of the proposed sign which is to be 2' x id' and about 3" thick of <br /> white baked enamel aluminum frame and backboard with a blue border, The <br /> letters "C, H. Fabrics" are to be 9" in height and a carmine red color with <br /> a light blue outline. TAe letters of the words "Dressmaking" and "Altera- <br /> tions" are to be of the same Light blue color as the sign border and are to <br /> <br /> '~I be 4 i/2" in height. All letters are to be painted onto the backboard. Color <br /> chips were also submitted. Mr. Jaquith asked if they wanted three colors an <br /> the sign and Mr. Callahan said that they did. Mr, Callahan stated that there <br /> would be no lighting and no awning, Mr. Holzbog suggested that the sign be <br /> centered under the windows of the second floor elevation. Mr, Callahan said <br /> that they would leave one course of brick showing below the bottom of the <br /> sign and the windows and door of the store, Mr. Jaquith then palled the mem- <br /> bers of the Commission for approval or disapproval and then told Mr, Callahan <br /> that they might go ahead with the fabrication of the sign.
