On motion made and
duly seconded Mr. Grant was elected permanent chairman of the Com-
mission.
Discussion was had as to whether Mrs. Thomas had been compen-
sated in full for her services and disbursements as clerk of the
Commission prior to her decease. The chairman was instructed to
ascertain the amount, if any, due to Mrs. Thomas, to contact her
executor, Mr. Stevens and to arrange for the payment to him of
any amount which might appear to have been owing to Mrs. Thomas.
Mr. Taylor then withdrew from the meeting, and his place
and that of Mr. Legro were taken by associate members Cole and
Bryant, who had both participated in earlier phases of the two
principal matters under consideration. Mr. Legro sat as an ob-
server during the rest of the meeting.
There was some discussion as to the efforts of the chairman
to find a substitute for Mrs. Thomas to serve as clerk to the
Commission.
The chairman then read the notice of the hearing on the ap-
plication of Minute Man Cab Company for a certificate of appro-
priateness for the erection of a sign on the premises at 1833
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District.
The applicant was represented by Mr. Martin Durkin. Discussion
was had as to the size of the sign which had previously been
displayed to the members and associate members sitting at an
earlier meeting on September 10, 1959, and as to the proposed
lighting of such sign. On motion made and duly seconded, it was
unanimously voted to grant a certificate of appropriateness to
Minute Man Cab Company to erect the sign in question at the pro-
posed location. The principal lettering on the sign contains the
words "Minute Man Cab" and the applicant's telephone number.
The lettering consists of black Roman letters appearing on
a light cream (or buff) rectangular background, which in turn
is silhouetted by a white decorative shape, which in turn appears
on a red background with which the sign is framed.
The Commission then turned its attention t the pending appli-
cation of Minute Man Auto Supply Co. for a certificate of ap pro-
priateness for the erection of a sign on the premises at 1845
Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District,
