PLANNING BOARD MEETING <br />Monday, May 17, 1954 <br />Present: Grindle, Hathaway, Irwin, Jaquith, Ripley. <br />Meeting opened at 7.45 o'clock. Due to pressure of other <br />activities at the present time, Mr. Adams asked for a temporary leave <br />of absence as chairman for the next four or -five weeks. As he had to <br />leave early, Mr. Irwin was elected temporary chairman for the evening. <br />Mr. Hathawa�jreported having talked with Mr. Perry Norton, <br />Executive Secretary or Institute of Planners. The gist of the informa- <br />tion gathered is: planning course graduates today are specialists in <br />1: Economics, 2: Public Administration, 3: Civil Engineering, and 4: <br />Architecture in that order. It would, therefore, be difficult to get <br />a Planner -Engineer. Salary, $5500 - $6500 with 2-3 years experience. <br />Should have had experience in a growing community. Suggested adver- <br />tising in Institute News. State qualifications, references, and set <br />dead -line for receipt of applications. <br />Mr. Grindle contacted Dr. Isaacs at Harvard. Suggested five <br />names, two of whom were present for interview_. <br />Mr. Zettek now working in Worcester on redevelopment project, <br />with home in Hopkinton, where he is. -secretary of the Planning Board. <br />Is now receiving $6500. Has Master's degree in City Planning from Har- <br />' <br />vard.and has had some engineering experience but not much. Mr. Braun <br />of Newton with U.S. Government Housing and Home Finance Agency, New <br />England representative. Has Masters degree in City Planning from <br />M.I.T. Only experience in engineering comes from being in business for <br />himself in developing subdivisions and so is familiar with subdivision <br />rules, and what he had as course in school. Is now getting $6000. <br />The qualifications which the Board desired were explained to <br />both, and as both have submitted applications they will be considered <br />with others. <br />It was decided that Mr. Hathaway draw up an ad to be sent to <br />Institute News in Cambxddge and American Society of Planning Officials, <br />1313 E. 60th St., Chicago after approved by other members of Planning <br />Board. Also a letter be drafted and a questionnaire for pertinent data <br />to be sent to applicants. <br />I <br />/ <br />It was also decided that applications should be received and <br />screened before any more interviews are given. <br />Lexington Construction Co. <br />Mr. Newgent presented a letter asking four questions on which <br />he wished a definite answer to each. These have to do with waiving <br />restrictions on Robinson Bill in the event it is purchased by a corpor- <br />ation which will limit the building to -11 houses, and who will contract <br />never to ask town to put in betterments. A sketch was submitted as a <br />tentative plan. It was the feeling of the Board that no requirements <br />should be waived, but left for 14r. Stevens to decide. <br />
