1
k
MANNING BOARD MEETING
Monday, June 16, 1952
Present: Adams, Hathaway, Johnson, Ripley, Potter.
Meeting opened at 7:50 o'clock.
McLaughlin
Mr. Charles McLaughlin and Major Baird, Executive Officer of the
Bedford Airport, appeared for discussion re change of zoning for pro-
posed housing project. Major Baird stated they were not immediately con-
cerned with army personnel, believed they could get through this winter,
but were more concerned with the civilian personnel coming from other
parts of the country, most of whom will be in a position to buy their
homes. Believes there will be a gradual build-up - a slow but permanent
growth of probably 6500-7000 people over a period of five years, of which
3000 will be military and 4500 civilian. Prefers they be scattered, as
there is no desire to destroy a shrine such as Lexington, nor do they
wish to interfere with local laws.
Bedford is strictly a defense base and will be permanent because
it is near M.T.T. which is one of if not the most important research
laboratories in the U.S. Mr. McLaughlin s.ated he is anxious to get
started and will leave it to the Board ar to best method of proceeding,
and would appreciate any cooperation in speeding it up.
Carrig
James A. Carrig and Mr. Nylander appeared with plans for subdi-
vision, Section #2, Minute Man Highlands, Concord Ave. and Walnut street.
Question of drainage on lots bordering Concord avenue, and plans left for
discussion with Mr. Burns.
James A. Carrig and Mr. Joyce appeared with plans for subdivision
of Section #3, Minute Man Highlands, Concord avenue and Pleasant street.
Plans left for discussion with Mr. Burns.
Date for tentative hearing on both above set for Monday, June 30.
Ridge Construction
Letter read from Mr. Bertagna to the effect that if he could not
have the entrance on Concord Turnpike as planned he would have to build
each house with a separate entrance on Turnpike. Moved by Mr. Ripley and
seconded by Mr. Hathaway that a letter be written Mr. Bertagna that it
had been indicated to the Planning Board that another right of way could
be obtained further up. So voted.
Simonds
Mr. Lee Simonds is interested in piece of land on Bedford street
near Route 128 and inquired as to possibility of rezoning for business.
